Dinosaur Jr – Farm [2009]

Dinosaur Jr – Farm
[Jagjaguwar, 2009]
genre: alternative underground rock , American rock, indie rock
album review by goresonic

Three years ago, there was the reunion of one of the most historical bands of the alternative underground scene of New York. Then in 2007, they create their first after reunion record named “Beyond”. The album had all the characteristics that made them famous but I think there wasn’t enough energy in it. Now, in 2009 their new record named “Farm” went out.
When I heard about their new record, my first thought was that it could be better for me not to listen to it. What’s the reason? I wanted to remember them as legends and not as some guys that produce records just for money. My second thought was that maybe I had to listen to once at least as an honor to them, and I think I did very well.
Noisy indie guitar start on “Pieces” and Mascis reminds me the reason why I admire them. “Old school” guitar riffs heavy bass and rhythmic drums follow Mascis special grange-punk voice. Then the romantic songs ”I want you to know” and “Ocean in the way”, with Mascis on a more nostalgic and erotic voice.
All the record continues just like that. Mascis wrote all the songs but to be honest my favorite one is the last (good bye) song written from Barlow (“Imagination Bird”). Every song written from him transforms the bands standards.
The big disadvantage of the album is the unnecessary and with no importance guitar solos on “Said the People” and especially on “I Don’t Wanna Go There” that transformed them to very boring songs. Mascis’ guitar passion could be shown in different way I think.
Of course the comparison with the triumph albums “Bug” or “Green Mind” is unavoidable and of course this album is way of that standards but I strongly believe that Dinosaur jr with this one came seriously back in business.

Headdress – Lunes [2009]

Headdress – Lunes
[No Quarter, 2009]
genre: drone, minimal, psychedelic, slowcore, folk, experimental
Album Review by Sovereign

Do you like drone music or modern psychedelic? Do you like bands like Natural Snow Building, Growing, Earth and Wooden Wand? Do you like cold music under a hot burning blanket? Do you like trips and dreams? Do you really like blues under a postmodern manner? If the answer is yes, just stay here… Slow tempos, sand inside your eyes, a desert in front of you and then a high snowed mountain. Rocks and water tumble down. Their music is psychedelic and something like slowcore. Experimental drones and slow motion guitars. I think they produce really good music. They sound to me original and innovative. Great job! Weird, deep, mystic, eerie, this music is uncanny. The album is strange but beautiful and sounds fully inspired. Dark ballads, scary music, closing eyes, slow rhythms and murder atmosphere. From Texas to New York… a trip from the summer to the winter. Hot and cold, scalding and frozen… enjoy and get inside of it. This music is progressive, this album (oh what a great mosaic floor in the cover…!!!) is beautiful.

LAST DRIVE live 2009

Live cast by Goresonic
Οι ίδιοι συνέχισαν σ’αυτούς τους πιο stoner-dessert «χαλαρούς» ρυθμούς με κομμάτια όπως το “Overloaded” και τα “Alabama song”, “A glass of broken dreams” και “Magdalene” από τον καινούργιο τους δίσκο.

Amorphis – Skyforger [2009]

Amorphis – Skyforger
[Nuclear blast records, 2009]
genre: melodic death, folk, gothic metal, metal
Album review by Edenbeast

This is the ninth release from the Finnish band and there has been 2 years of preparations for the ‘Skyforger’. Clearly these guys know what atmospheric metal means because they are among the creators of this genre. And in this album they show us the true meaning of this kind of metal. Skyforger is full of emotions in every part and in every note. Grief, nostalgia, romanticism, sorrow, and many other feelings which anyone can find inside himself. Vocals are clean and harsh mostly but in some parts sound like pure death vocals. In the guitars and drums there is nothing worth of mentioning, they play beautiful and easy. There is a perfect balance between death, atmospheric, folk, and gothic melodies. The keyboards still do the right job. Production is great. I really love this album because it reminds me the days I started listening to metal and that travels me years ago. Recommended to everyone, it is a great choice.

White Static Demon – decayed [2009]

White Static Demon – decayed
[Avalanche, 2009] Digital-only debut release from this project
genre: noise, drone, experimental, ambient
Album Review by Sovereign

Noisy soundscapes that can thrill your brain. “White Static Demon is a new Justin K Broadrick project for which he has been working on recordings for over one year. Again, like Council Estate Electronics, White Static Demon was inspired by Justin collecting and compiling material from Final cassette releases on his Post Mortem Rekordings label circa 1984-87”( http://justinkbroadrick.blogspot.com/). An album full of extreme noises, drones and experimental electronics. An abstract electro drone distortion. This is extreme and this is experimental. It is a new release which has been inspired by old material. I really enjoy it because it is a noisy ambient trip. Dreamy and gloomy vacations offered to my brain. Jump up and then dive into an extreme and rattle or hooting pool.

Anaal Nathrakh – In The Constellation Of The Black Widow [2009]

Anaal Nathrakh – In The Constellation Of The Black Widow
[Candlelight Records,2009]
genre: black metal
Album review by Edenbeast

The English band’s new release is here to give us what we expected. High speed devilish sick black metal. They follow the same recipe as their previous albums. Barbaric speedy black metal couples followed by melodic death metal refrains. The result is fantastic. In vocals vitriol is just amazing, he just do any sound his throat can make. Shitty sick screams, growls, clean singing, I just love his vocals. In guitars we can hear unstoppable tireless ecstatic riffing. But the most amazing of all are the drums. The speed is just unbelievable. I don’t think there is a human being to play in that speeds live. He will last at most three minutes before he pass out. And I can see why they had Nicolas Barker as a drummer. The thing is that this album is great and not recommended to sensitive ears cause they‘ll surely bleed.

Slipknot, Mastodon, Down, Kylesa, Torche – Rockwave Festival 2009

Rockwave Festival 2009 – Day 4 , 30/ 06/ 2009
Slipknot, Mastodon, Down, Kylesa, Torche

Live Cast by Sovereign

απο rocking.gr

απο rocking.gr

God help the girl – God help the girl [2009]

God help the girl – God help the girl
[Matador records, 2009]
genre: noise pop, melodic pop, adult pop
Album review by goresonic

‘God help the girl’ is strongly related with Belle and Sebastian. It’s actually Stuart Murdoch compositions and ideas, written during the last five years and played by assorted members of Belle and Sebastian and an orchestra, and sung (almost all of them) by beautiful women voices.
What can I say about this album? The entire music organs that are used (including violins, pianos and saxophones) are perfectly “collaborated” with all the different sweet women vocals (especially Catherine Ireton’s PERFECT pop voice who sings most of the songs). The album travels back to the 60’s and sometimes sounds like a girly pop band and other times like a 60’s soul band (especially on “Funny Little Frog”). It’s an album to falling in love with.
I believe that we maybe found the pop album of the year.

Collapse under the empire – Systembreakdown
[2009]
genre: post-rock, instrumental, electronica
Album Review by Sovereign

This is post-rock with a modern approach. Electronica vibes, beats and sounds mixed with guitars’ distortions and rhythm sections. Nice sound and one of the most acceptable post-rock albums of the year.
After all these replicas and really boring releases of the last years in the genre of post-rock and other instrumental music branches , this album is an exception. I can say, even if they don’t have vocals, that this band can touch inside of you.
I don’t know but I think that these guys and God is an Astronaut are different, and they are years in front of the others in post-rock music style.

Mudy on the Sakuban – kidnie [2009]

Mudy on the Sakuban – kidnie
[Zankyo,2009]
genre: math rock, post-rock, instrumental, indie rock, experimental rock
Album Review by Sovereign

Instrumental intelligent rock music by five young Japanese guys from Nagoya (Jpn). This type of math rock and this technical style they had in the instruments lends them a clever and interesting attitude and music mode. Psychedelic, groovy and prog sound collage. Dance vibes and hard rock energy. This album is a surprise for 2009, it can attract fans of post-rock and in general, lovers of instrumental music, but also it can be attractive to experimental rock fans, as well as to some math rock and technical metal fans. Their noise and their fuss is in high levels, they do not have a method; they do not follow a beat or a standard pace. They change rhythms and tempo really often and they make some excellent music collages.

Final – Reading All The Right Signals Wrong [2009]

Final – Reading All The Right Signals Wrong
[No Quarter, 2009]
genre: ambient, noise, experimental, electronica, drone
Album Review by Sovereign

“Justin Broadrick has always made music which could one day serve as a soundtrack to the end of the world, should we ever need one. Whether with Godflesh or Jesu [click here for other noiz post about: Jesu/envy, Jesu2007, Jesu2007Conqueror, Jesu EP, JKB & Jarboe– themes of urban decay, corporate greed and post-modern malaise often set the bleak tone. Final, his longest running project, is no different. Formed in 1982, it has often run parallel to his more recognizable work and served as an undefinable and more experimental outlet.”-ThrillJockey.com.
Justin produces the entire album with an Apple Mac laptop and offers ethereal noises, ambiences and drones to us. Experimental electronica music from a continuous guy who is assuming bands with different attitudes and music backgrounds. Metal, industrial, shoegaze, post-rock, grind, dub and drones are some of his inspirations. This guy never stops, I really respect him and I believe he already offered me some of my favourite albums and I m looking forward to listen to the new project with Aaron Turner “Greymachine”. Final’s new release is an experimental silence, a lowcore, full of soundscapes and relaxing sounds, some drones from the background and experimentalisms from the Mac. Interesting music, lounge atmosphere, distorted silences and progressive noises. Nice album only in a vinyl format (pending a CD release).

Third Art Brut’s Album named “Art Brut vs. Satan” is their debut album at Cooking vinyl record label. Indie rock sounds in a full of energy dance punk album.
Brut’s Edie Argos tried to be better and get rid off the tag they carry all these years from the song that made them famous (”Formed a band”). I cannot say that he really made it but his efforts produced an album that’s worth a try.

Andrew Bird the songwriter/singer and violin player from Chicago creates his fifth solo album. Interesting violin performances, accompanied by his sweet and romantic voice and clarinet sounds, in order to make “Noble Beast”. I cannot say that I was expecting from him to create something better than his previous album “Armchair Apocrypha” and I think this is the reason that he didn’t disappoint me.

Manic street preachers – Journal for Plague Lovers
[Sony BMG Europe, 2009]
genre: alternative pop, Britpop

I would characterize them as “The last survivors of Britpop”. The 18 years old band is the only one remained from the 90’s Britpop wave and strikes again with their ninth album. Produced from Steve Albini, one of the best producers of our time, “Journal for Plague Lovers” is an album that continues their history. Barbed-wire guitars, rhythmic drums and sometimes aggressive vocals in an album that is produced to honor their lost member Richey James since most of the songs performed here are his. A pleasant album that gives Manic the opportunity to share their feelings with us.

Amia Venera Landscape , Bird from the Abyss (EPs) [2009]

Amia Venera Landscape – Ep
[2009]
genre: post-metal, sludge, post-hardcore, hardcore, experimental, metal, tech metal
EP Review by Sovereign

A sludgy post-hardcore from an Italian band. Brutal vocals rotate with clean and give to the atmosphere an alternative color.
Technical play of instruments, acceleration and high speed guitars. This EP is a great piece of the work about what this band can do.
Three well enough tracks with a heavy attitude, a hardcore sound and a technical approach. This is the first ever work of this band, but out of the blue is really well structured, great from the composition point of view and very good as a sound. No more to say, give it a try and enjoy their inspiration. Modern metal with alternative strokes of the brush.

Bird from the Abyss – I EP
[CD-r,2009]
genre: experimental, psychedelic, folk, experimental rock, art rock, prog, ambient, drone.
EP Review by Sovereign

This EP is a kind of folk doom, it is not exactly a metal release, it is more an experimental rock something than a heavy sound music, it is instrumental music with strange instruments and a folklore attitude.
There is an ethnic and a world music atmosphere.
This release is psychedelic and progressive.
A hot air from Africa, sounds from ancient years, flutes and noise, drones and lutes.
The Finnish band mix ambient and drone sounds with instrumental folkish rock and stoner-a-like fuzzy music.
Really enjoyable first attempt from a new band.
They deserve a lot.

Xela – The Illuminated [2009]

Xela – The Illuminated
[Dekorder, 2009]
genre: noise, ambient, drone, experimental, dark ambient, abstract, black
Album Review by Sovereign

This is a Digitalis Limited 2008 release, but back then, it was in an audio cassette version and in a limited edition. This year it comes out in a vinyl release from Dekorder. Two ambient tracks, full of experimentalisms and noises. 40 minutes of trips and dark memories. Track No1 ‘Black Scripture’ is very atmospheric and really experimental, it is a great composition from the band and I think is my favorite. Dark and gloomy, noisy and a bit dreamy. This track is the ambient, chilly part of the vinyl. Track No 2 ‘Gilted Rose’ it isn’t so atmospheric like the previous one, but is more mysterious and really black and scary. There’s a distant black metal style evil vocal that appears to possess your mind. It is recommended to fans of drone, ambient, noise and maybe black metal. It is the dark and black metal part of the vinyl and it can contradict to great dark ambient and atmospheric black metal bands. Great try from the band. Check out the previous releases of them.

Arcana Coelestia – Le Mirage de l’idéal [2009]

Arcana Coelestia – Le Mirage de l’idéal
[Aeternitas Tenebrarum Music Foundation, 2009]
genre : funeral doom metal, death
Album review by Edenbeast

That’s the second album for Arcana Coelestia and I can say that I’m quite overwhelmed. This is not funeral doom. It’s funeral doooooooooooooooom. Easily compared with Esoteric but this has a bit more ambient, dramatic tone. Vocals are death groooowls mostly, but you can also find clear ones. In the fifth track there is some Italian talking which lead to true black metal growls coming right from the early 90’s. There are also a few female vocals in this album. Drums are really heavy and really slow. Guitars are slow too. The compositions cause an emotional explosion. Melancholy, darkness, romance, madness, fear all are here together. Pretty amazing work by these guys I believe they are at the same level as Esoteric. And a big applause for the glorious closing track.

The field – Yesterday and Today [2009]

The field – Yesterday and Today
[Anti / Kompakt, 2009]
genre: techno, dance, ambient, electronica
album review by goresonic

I strongly believe that there are some records that you must listen to at the right time under the right conditions in order to like them. That’s exactly what happened to me with field’s new album “Yesterday and today”. As being influenced from their magnificent debut album “From here we go sublime”, the first two-three times I listen to it was a disappointment to me. Then, one summer evening I started to listen to and in the same time I was scanning the sun from my balcony. The music got into me and I felt the summer mood of the album. I imagined sunset in a beach, summer parties and chill-out on a deck-chair near the sea. This album is dedicated to all of us that our business duties don’t allow us to enjoy the summer atmosphere all the months that it lasts.

Vinterriket – horizontmelancholie [2009]

Vinterriket – horizontmelancholie
[Steinklang, Heimatfolk, 2009]
genre: dark ambient, black, dark, experimental rock, ambient
Album Review by Sovereign

A dark and cloudy release, a relaxing sound, an ambient music picture, all these together can result this album. The use of German language in the lyrics makes it darker to me and gives to it a folk and traditional dimension. Christoph Ziegler who is the guy behind this project, proves that his inspiration is abyssal or something like bottomless. Last year’s album of him “Zeit-Los:Laut-Los” bewitched me, and I think this release is again in high levels and it can be one of the best slow and dark ambient releases of the year. Beautiful silence vibes, electronic tones and some acoustic strings spreading around and makes it more experimental but for sure more easy to listen it. Ethereal sounds and dark chorus… so be careful, if you close your eyes… you can leave your mind, you can dive in a dark and cloudy river and go down with a wooden boat (I think it will be released in a limited black wooden package)… discover the sound of Vinterriket. Dark as hell.

Arthemesia – a.O.a. [2009]

ARTHEMESIA – a.O.a.
[Spikefarm Records 2009]
Genre: atmospheric black metal
Album Review by Edenbeast

After 8 years the Finnish band Arthemesia released a new album. That’s pretty much time to prepare a new album and the result is very good in deed. Their music is atmospheric black combined with dark and depressive melodies pretty easy for anyone to hear. The tempo is slow/mid except the last track ‘Liber Omega’. Vocals are harsh black and in some parts clean dark.
Very good compositions in the entire album make your mind travel to a cold finnish forest dream. The cd is built on perfection of balance and harmony, offering you strong emotions. The biggest moment of a.o.a is the closing song in which you find pure black metal parts combined greatly with all the elements I wrote above. A really good album recommended to any metal fun who can stand the black vocals

Pandora’s Black Book – Black Brothel [2009]

Pandora’s Black Book – Black Brothel
[Tympanik Audio, 2009]
genre: electronica, idm, drum n bass, ambient, noise, experimental
Album Review by Sovereign

Idyllic music, sometimes with beats and drums others just like a pure melody, an ambient soundscape. Pandora’s Black Book is a project of Lucidstatic, actually is the Alaskan composer James Church. This is a well done album, nice production and an intelligent kind of ambient sounds. A really complicated release flies from dance vibes to experimental passages, and goes through ambient seas to noise cloudy skies. This isn’t a pure ambient album, because there are, as I said, a lot of different sound lines and music origins. I think it is a well composed album and is really interesting and sweet to listen to it in summer days. Electronic experimentalisms from a well established new label with a lot of interesting releases. Quite atmospheric and sometimes high level ambient music can fly you away. In here there is a dream that can be ideal and really beautiful as never before. Enjoy.

Eels – Hombre Lobo: 12 songs of desire [2009]

Eels – Hombre Lobo: 12 songs of desire
[Vagrant Records , 2009]
Genre: alternative pop, post grunge
Album review by goresonic

A big come back for the Eels, after 4 years of delay and their previous double cd ” blinking lights and other revelations”. Mark Oliver Everett’s band strikes again with this 12 songs album named “Hombre Lobo: 12 songs of desire”. Sweet and intelligent pop melodies with Everett’s characteristic voice is what we listen to in this album. The dance songs are full of happiness and the ballads are really lovable. I cannot say that this album has some points that prove an improvement but that’s not necessary a disadvantage since the 40 minutes album it’s very easy and pleasant listening. As a conclusion, I will mention Everett’s confession on “ordinary man” “I’d rather be alone than try to be someone that I’m not.”

The Heartland – Frontier [2009]

The Heartland – Frontier
[Creep,Blackout,2009]
genre: hardcore, math metal, jazz, grindcore, experimental, post-hardcore, tech metal, metal
Album Review by Sovereign

Strange music in a mathcore way. Intelligent passages and difficult parts. Here is the difference, the Heartland make this heavy, strange and insane music a bit more acceptable and digestible (for the ears). John from the band sent us their album and I found it really interesting. I think their music is really modern and their music structure quite clever. Experimental music with a variety of sounds and melodies(sometimes you can’t use the word melody for them, but anyway). Experimental vocals, screams, death, brutal and emo, clean and clear. Fantastic drum sessions and heavy parts, slow riffs and again speed, acceleration and –core parts. Their music is technical but they are not loosing the harmony and the atmospheres. Nice sounds, aggressive attitude and for sure more melodic than the dillinger escape plan, or other mathcore bands (architecs, psyopous etc). No way to categorise them like that. They promote a death-jazz-experimental and in any way intelligent and technical metal profile. They combine different and difficult genres, they are interesting and you have to give them a try.

George Dorn Screams – O’Malley’s Bar [2009]

George Dorn Screams – O’Malley’s Bar
[Ampersand, 2009]
genre: post-rock, shoegaze, slowcore, indie rock, post-punk, alternative metal
Album Review by Sovereign

As they said in their website: “George Dorn Screams is definitely a band for late evenings. This music is full of sincerity, calm and melancholy. George Dorn Screams is also energy coming from between post rock and slowcore”, and I think I totally agree with that statement. Their music is magic, they use female vocals, and their music is slow, alternative, noisy and at the same time atmospheric and melancholic. There is an energy inside the moody atmosphere, there is an intension behind the melody of Magda Powalisz‘s voice. The band from Poland brings together alternative metal sounds and shoegaze chords. In July 2008 the band recorded the new material to be published on their second album in Elmwood Studio, Dallas, Texas. The recording was produced by John Congleton, (Explosions In The Sky, The Polyphonic Spree, Logh, The Appleseed Cast, The Roots, Pleasant Groove, Modest Mouse). There is a great harmony from the beginning till the end of the album. Note and tunes lie down and fulfill our hearts with beautiful sentiments, they can full my eyes with senses and my mind with desire to think and feel. I try to feel, and this is a great achievement for a band these days, they can make you feel. Don’t drop them like something bad, they need your attention. It is fully atmospheric, slow but noisy indie rock music. Excellent album, a modern rock tear. Fantastic guitars, ost dreams and excellent structure.

Magik Markers – Balf Quarry [2009]

Magik Markers – Balf Quarry
[Drag City, 2009]
genre: noise rock, experimental rock
Album review by goresonic

‘Balf quarry’ is Magik Markers’ escape from Thurston’s Ecstatic Peace label and their first album for Drag city label. From the first years of their existance, Sonic Youth’s inspiration was obvious in their sound, something that it’s 100% normal for every New York city based noise rock band.
In the year 2007, after a lot of cd-rs and other releases, they created “Boss” their first album with their original sound. The album was a thrash-punk noisy bomb and it was voted as one of the best albums of that year.
This year’s “Balf Quarry” come to continue that progress. In some music magazines and sites was written that this work is a copy of “Boss” and maybe some of you will believe that too. Although, I would say that even if this were true the album is more than acceptable. The first two songs are proving that, “Risperdal“ with the noisy-pop start and Elisa Ambrogio’s really intensive voice and “Don’t talk in your sleep” with the paranoid guitars. Then the psycho-thrash punk no-wave “Jerks” and that proves how an album becomes interesting. Their noisy sound experience continues in the rest of the album with a slow exception of “State numbers”, and ends with a drone guitar end accompanied by wandering Ambrogio’s vocals.
“Balf Quarry” is for me an album that shows Magik Markers paranoiac sentiments and gives the opportunity to discover the band deeply.

Mara – Sanity Collapsing
Demo, 2009
Genre: black metal, dark ambient, industrial
Album Review by Edenbeast

Mara_-_Sanity_CollapsingMara sends us their work and it is a pleasure for us to review it. Black post-metal compositions with dark ambient elements and many samples, it is a kind of depressive black metal with industrial influences. Vocals are black, reminding Leviathan. Production isn’t good but it doesn’t bother me because it gives to their music a cold and dry atmosphere. And don’t forget they have all the excuses for that, no label, no budget, first recording etc… These guys showing that they know how to use all sounds their instruments can create and how to manage samples. On the other hand they are lacking in the composition part. Seems like in this demo they try to cover the shortness of ideas with good sound management. Although I can recognize this as a good first recording attempt and these guys showing good potential. Recommended to ambient black metal fans.

ZAO – Awake? [2009]

ZAO – Awake?
[Ferret, 2009]
genre: hardcore, metalcore, metal, death metal, post-hardcore, extreme metal
Album Review by Sovereign

ZAO is one of the bands which made metalcore. They started as a Christian metalcore band (remember that in –core genres the most of the bands follow an attitude or a belief) [straight edge, pagan, vegan, satanism, right wing, left wing etc], but after some members change they are not anymore, as the most of the band members are not considered as Christians anymore. All these years several people take place behind the instruments of ZAO, as I said, but the band keep a unique character and a familiar hardcore metal sound. Brutal vocals rotate with clean and every track has a different –core attitude. Death, punk, metal, post, thrash and heavy tones. This release is an album-compilation of metallic hardcore. There are some routes you have to follow in order to build a core something, and ZAO did it really well. An album for metal heads, an album for head bangers, this release is quite strong and excellent from the music structure side. A metal album that can satisfy everyone who likes hard and heavy music. Awake? is another solid addition to ZAO’s rich catalog. It’s not cracking or impressive, but fans will get everything they expect from a ZAO release.

Maudlin of the Well – Part The Second [2009]

Maudlin of the Well – Part The Second
[Self Released, 2009]
genre: experimental rock, progressive rock, chamber pop, jazz, avant-garde, avant-prog, metal
Album Review by Sovereign

The story behind the recording of this album is really interesting. From 1999-2001, maudlin of the Well released three albums. These albums seamlessly blend metal, jazz, and prog in a fusion that is breathtaking. However, maudlin of the Well’s avant-garde nature also kept them from being more widely known. They disbanded in 2001, some members of the group going on to form Kayo Dot, a well known avant garde metal band. Yet over the years, through music message boards, forums, and blogs, maudlin of the Well slowly began to pick up a devoted following. In a MySpace blog post in 2008, maudlin of the Well front man Toby Driver mentioned he wanted to record some older songs that were never recorded, but was restricted by financial issues. Response and enthusiasm from fans was massive and a fan donated enough money to record a new album On May 2009 is online and free to download from the internet (there is a donate choice, like in rainbows style).
Experimental, orchestral, ambient, progressive rock and metal music. It is like and avant jazz something. It is quite strange and interesting at the same time. A great album from a great band. The tracks are actually new releases, but some parts of them are ideas and inspirations from the older records, that never been in them. These are not b sides; these are great tracks, and new recordings at all. Dark atmosphere, theatrical view, cinematic orchestra style, experimentalisms, and great compositions. This album is one of the best albums around experimental music.

Tori Amos – abnormally attracted to sin
[Universal Republic, 2009]
genre: alternative rock, indie rock, pop, indie pop, female vocalist, brit pop
Album Review by Sovereign

Here it is another beautiful album from Amos at the end of the zero’s decade. She wrote, compose and produce the whole album. And what an album!! More than 70 minutes of beautiful music, great compositions, fantastic sounds and excellent voice. On her tenth studio album, Tori Amos writes no less penetratingly than she did on her first about the way women navigate the intersection between sex and power. She is talented and this is obvious. Her work is almost wonderful. A great album for the summer nights and mornings and noons, who cares, feel comfortable, find a cool place and start the record. Epic album. Brit pop, alternative rock and indie sounds mixed with her fantastic voice. And don’t forget to mention that this is the first work of her in her new label, which provides her fully freedom and control of the work and herself as an artist.

Young Windows/ Melt banana – Split Series 2 [2009]

[Temporary Residence , 2009]
Genre: noise rock, noise
Split review by goresonic

Young windows this noise rock American band decided to make a series of split singles with a lot of bands that have pretty much the same sound with them. Some bands are: Melt Banana, Pelican, Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy and other bands that are not announced yet. The songs will be new and only released in these series. The singles collaborations editions are going to be super limited. The record label has announced the one time pressing of 2000 copies of each one of them.
The only one that I found and listen to is this one with Melt Banana. Young windows for this collaboration made their sound heavier and noisier. “Long live the new Weight” is a dark noise rock song with deep guitars and lousy drums.
What can I say about melt banana? This band never disappointed me. Their music gets you crazy, especially YaSuKo O’s voice. Speedy voices, guitar hits, rapid drums and a band with 10 years of existence is back again.

NOFX – Coaster [2009]

NOFX – Coaster
[Fat wreck chords, 2009]
Genre: punk rock, ska punk
Album Review by Goresonic

Twenty five years of existence. Twenty-five years full of punk rock energy. Their political actions and the way they transformed their music to political movement against American wars are memorable. The way they perform their songs with a funny but loud mood is what it really made them special. Their previous failure with “Wolves In Wolves’ Clothing” didn’t disappointed them and this year NOFX, the symbol of the new age punk, came back in business with “Coaster” and show to everyone why they are that famous.
From the first hearing I realize their return to where they belong: the LA – punk and ska-punk. Songs like “We called it America”,“The quitter” “Blasphemy”, “First call”,” Eddie, Bruce and Paul”, ”Suits and ladders” are the examples of their LA punk return and songs like “Creeping out Sara”, “Best god in show”, “The agony of victory” and “I am an alcoholic” are examples of their ska-punk roots.
They start the album with “We called it America” an aggressive start full of speed drums. The political speculation is obvious from the first lines of the song (“That was the America that we thought was number one”). Then the bass is violently used from Fat Mike on “Quitter”, 25 years of experience made him understand that this instrument is probably the most important in punk groups. The bass violation continues in the next song named ”First call”. In both songs NOFX show (especially Mike) the result of their previous alcoholic problems. In the ska-punk song “I’m an alcoholic” we see a self-sarcasm for the negative consequences of their alcoholism. The music that accompanies the lyrics was perfectly chosen and written.
Back to the political – social songs, “Blasphemy” and “Best God show” except of their fantastic guitar riffs and the fucking hardcore drums are also the way that the band view the religious hypocrisy and madness and explain the reasons why they are atheists.
The album surprise is the “creeping out Sara”. The band’s sense of humour for them and for other bands is obvious. “Creeping out Sara”, my favourite song in the album, is Mike’s Personal experience with Sara from Tegan & Sara duo. His voice is the typical NOFX voice that made me their fan back when I was 15.
A song that we have to mention is “my orphan year”. A song that is loud and very rhythmic. Mike’s voice is more upset as he is sharing his sentiments for loosing both his parents when he was alcoholic and how sorry he feels for that. That’s the reason that NOFX in this song gave it all and transformed this song in one of their bests.
The album ends with “One Million Coasters” on a smooth & jazzy vibe.
I really enjoyed their return to the music scene. I hope you will too.

These two Extended Play discs promote experimental doom metal. Both bands are quite influenced from My Dying Bride, and they both bring forward the sound of metal. Sludge compositions, dark atmospheres, noise guitars and slow tones. Alternative glance of doom and heavy riffs. Two EPs that can introduce you to the dusty side of old school doom metal. Both bands use experimental, brutal or scream harsh vocals. Extreme music from two interesting bands. A combination of old fashioned doom metal and alternative drone metal of 00s.

CFCF, Eilen Jewel, the Same Sky [2009]

CFCF 2009CFCF – Panesian nights EP
[Paper Bag Records, 2009]
genre: indie electronic ,electronic pop ,disco

CFCF is Mike Silver, an electronic producer from Montreal, Canada. This ep has an old-fashion disco sound. Some times is a bit chilled out, some others is more ripping. It reminds you the 80’s disco school music. One or two songs of this ep can easy be listened in a house dance party.

[Signature sounds, 2009]
genre: folk, country pop, blues

This is a 60’s era album. Anyone who listens to the album without knowing her, will probably believe that is a 1966 – 1967 production. Blues and country traditional music with Eilen ’s sweet voice. Some songs turned me blue and some others gave me happiness. Finally, it is worth to mention the 3 covers (Sometime blues,The darkest day, I’m gonna dressed black) which were transformed from her performance.

thesameskyThe Same Sky – Two Hearts/Apart Under The Same Sky
[Vo, 2009]
Genre: indie psychedelic, folk

‘The Same sky’ is actually a fifteen year old boy from Chile named Joseph Simon. He’s singing and playing the guitar as well. His voice has a melancholic, erotic and sweet sound. His guitar playing is warm in a slow rhythm. This is a melancholic album for all the cold winter days that are spent at home. His influences are obvious Beirut and Arcade fire. I think the future is in front of this young talented boy.

Woods – Songs of Shame [2009]

Woods – Songs of Shame
[Shrimper/Woodsist, 2009]
genre: noise pop, lo-fi, pop americana , folk ,psychedelic pop
Album review by Goresonic

‘Songs of Shame’ is the forth full length album of this NYC based band, named Woods. The first time I’ve listened to the album I said that this new Woods album is acceptable. Then I started to listen carefully the album and the acceptable feeling was transformed to a lovable sensation.
Melodic voices with interesting noise guitar solos and loud drums. The big surprise of the album is the forth song named “September with Pete”. It’s a nine minute guitar jam that I really didn’t expect, especially not in the middle of the album. The next song (Down this road) comes next, just to keep the balance in the record. Then the melodic “Born to lose” shares happiness and three songs before the end the melancholic “Rain on” is the perfect song to describe the album’s philosophy.
Songs of shame is not only an album to improve the band, but also gives the example to follow in order to improve the lo-fi scene as well.

The Last Drive – Heavy Liquid [2009]

THE LAST DRIVE – HEAVY LIQUID
[Happy Crasher/Blind Bastard Records, 2009]
genre: garage rock, psychobilly, rock n roll, desert rock
Album Review by Judas

Sometimes artist’s little comments include the whole spirit that a reviewer is trying to describe. The Heavy Liquid album is dedicated to Lux Interior (lead singer and former of THE CRAMPS) and to Mr. Hunter S. Thompson. If you don’t dig those two you’re probably unable to understand what the LAST DRIVE is about.
Formed in the early 80’s in Athens, Greece they were the best English-spoken band in town and they kept the legend of their name until 1995 when they disbanded. Last drive’s music melting pot was a mix of garage, rockabilly, and surf. They took all the elements of 50’s and 60’s music and they made something fresh and unique in the late 80’s with the albums “Underworld Shakedown”, 1986 and “Heatwave”, 1988. Those albums are on top of the 80’s garage/rock’n’roll/punk era. On the next 3 albums, the band changed musical direction. “Blood Nirvana”, 1990, “F#ckhead Entropy”, 1992 and “Subliminal”, 1994, are heavier including heavy rock elements, dessert sound and represent the late 80’s early 90’s Athens decline and the raise of the political and musical underground movement. During their career except all the rock’n’roll and garage stereotypes that they always kept questioning, they sang about city’s decadence, the despair of being alone and the heroin as a part of the process that kills all the rebel souls. With having a hardcore political line and delivering their music in every little corner in Greece, playing anywhere they were invited they created a myth all these years. They played with the Wipers, Jesus and Mary Chain, the Gun Club. They toured in Germany with Dead Moon and they also played some shows in Spain. Finally they seemed to represent everything the Greek music underground was all about.
In 1995 the disbanded and after 12 years, silence was broken with 3 sold out gigs in Athens that were followed with many more in Greece and Europe. Unlike many empty reunions this one was worth. The tense on those gigs was the proof with everybody going completely crazy. Those shows were captured on film and the “Time Is Not Important” release on cd/dvd was just a reminding war-up for this year’s full length “Heavy Liquid” on Drive’s own record label “Happy Crasher”. This album includes everything The Last Drive was and still is about. The sound is similar to the latest releases of the band and all the 80’s generation heroes fly like drunken ghosts while the album is on the instant replay. Beat literature, rock’n’roll attitude, massive hits, great artwork and smart lyrics from a band that doesn’t have to prove their history, instead they take it one step forward with this effort.
LOVERS OF ROCK N ROLL DIG THIS ALBUM IMMEDIATELY

Human Bell, Aerial, From the sky 2008

hbHuman Bell – human bell
[Thrill Jockey, 2008]
genre: post-rock, experimental, minimal

Atmospheric post-rock. Minimal routes and experimental rock vibes.
The debut album of human bell is promising and based on distant melodies and cool atmospheres. Their rock is not noisy, it is calm peaceful and sedate. Great melodies and fantastic atmospheres.

This is an EP from a Swedish band for 2008. This disc touches me.
I found their music sweet and quite beautiful and I m looking forward for their new album “Put It This Way in Headlines”. Post-rock with some dark and post-punk vocals. Noisy guitars and noise distortions.

Sunn 0))) – Monoliths & Dimensions [2009]

Sunn 0))) – Monoliths & Dimensions
[Southern Lord, 2009]
genre: drone, dark ambient, metal, experimental, industrial, doom, black metal, lowcore
Album Review by Sovereign
Last year I have been impressed with the experimental live performance Sunn did in Norway (domkirke 2008 ). I think this try they made over there, is presented this year with their new album in a more professional way. A dark, noisy and doomy release, with a black, pagan, mystic atmosphere and Attila on the vocals, spoken words, screams etc etc. Fantastic mood, excellent noises, dreamy (or nightmare) vocals, great drones, huge distortions, shitty amplifiers and a great album at the end as a result. O’malley and Anderson collaborated with composer Eyvind Kang (notable for his work with John Zorn, Marc Ribot, Bill Frisell, etc.) on various acoustic ensembles, in addition to the Helios fueled electric guitars and basses. Key players on the album include Australian guitar genius Oren Ambarchi, enigmatic Hungarian vocalist Attila Csihar (Mayhem, Tormentor, etc.) as I already said and slow music godfather Dylan Carlson (Earth), as well as a brass section: Steve Moore (of Earth), Julian Priester (worked with Sun Ra in the 50s, John Coltrane’s African Brass band, and Herbie Hancock’s Sextant band) and new-music horn player Stuart Dempster. There’s also an upright bass trio, French & English horns, harp & flute duo, piano, reed & strings ensembles, and a Viennese woman’s choir led by Persian vocal savant Jessika Kenney. This work is unbelievable. The album is an hymn to drone and a definition of dark ambient. It is an industrial dull work and an experimental metal try. Prepare your ears, they ‘re gonna bleed.

____________________________________________________
An Italian sound artist – composer send us some months ago 2 records of him and one compilation of his record label named trashfucknet which includes a song of his. After the first hearing, I realized that even the production was a bit dilettante the compositions were of a pure industrial – techno quality. Then, I saw his myspace page and his record label page and I discover that we were talking about a full DIY label that it’s worth to mention.

FabioRosho’s untitled is heavy techno album. His Berlin techno influences are obvious. His music even if it’s too dark and noisy, makes you move into its rhythm. Album that definitely sounds better in a club. It’s the sound that makes you dance and jump. The only weakness is the unprofessional production which is the logical result of a DIY record.

FabioRosho’s tracks is a dark industrial electronic album. This album is darker than the previous one. It’s more mysterious and more “scary”. Even if I liked untitled more than this one as an album, I would say that this one has two unbelievable good songs. The first one is “KReM@ v1.0”, an industrial “bomb” in our ears and the second one is a drum ’n’ bass song named “GRAVE”.

The compilation is a techno experiment of amateur musicians. So this means that the production is not good and a lot of the songs are just pure noise. Although FabioRosho’s song here is a Berlin techno travel. A song full of energy. Other songs that are worth to be mentioned: Dental Work – Live Human Experimentation, RedSK – Nmcxsnji.

Ps.

Balmorhea, Coala Pascal, Heroin and your veins [2009]

Three new (2009) albums. Three post-rock / ambient / experimental releases. Three works quite similar to each other, easy listening rock and shoegaze, neo classical passages and instrumental carpets…

Balmorhea – all is wild, all is silent
[Western Vinyl, 2009]
genre: post-rock, ambient, neo-classical, instrumental, experimental rock

balAn excellent ethereal and rhythm release from an Austin based band. They mix all kinds of strings like violin, cello, guitar, banjo, double bass, with piano and more, and they create a collage of sounds. This band is an emotional orchestra. Talented people, create fantastic music. The most of the times instrumental albums is not so commercial, and it is not so attractive to the ears, but these guys create great soundscapes and their work can be more attractive than others. They can intertwine your mind, your soul and your feelings. Their music is quite cinematic and theatrical.

Coala Pascal – lifting cranes have already heard that
[2009]
genre: experimental rock, ambient, post-rock, electronica, lo-fi

foldcoaerThis band has no distributor. They are not in a label, but I think they should be. Electronic post-rock music, ambient sounds and slow motion vibes. Easy listening relaxing music and dreamy compositions. Half an hour of decently and trimly soundscapes. I think their music is quite original, pioneer and innovator. Check them out if you like experimental rock, ambient electronica and lo-fi. This is really modern post-rock by a band from Ukraine. Great job, they deserve some congratulations.

Heroin and your Veins – Nausea
[Verdura,2009]
genre: instrumental, dark, alternative rock, ambient, indie rock, post-rock, experimental, post punk

naus Another ambient trip album. They remind me bohren and dur club of gore. They are similar with the above, but they have a more alternative, indie and dark rock side. Their guitars are murkier. They are so experimental, and they combine darkwave music and post-punk feelings with ambient and emotional sounds. I vote for this album, and it can be a fellow traveler for every night. Sometimes the sound of this album sounds really progressive and other times scary. Dark music and slow tunes. Dusty noises and soundtrack recordings.

And so I Watch you from Afar – and so i watch you from afar
[Smalltown America, 2009]
genre: experimental rock, instrumental, post-rock, noise-rock, avant-prog, math rock
Album Review by Sovereign

Incredible experimental rock music with a punk, post rock and progressive attitude. This album is really interesting and it is the debut full length release from this band. A virtuoso instrument sound and an avant prog sound collage. Accelerated rock speed, noisy percussions and post-hardcore guitars. There is a metal heart deep inside their minds and make their rock more attractive to modern metal fans. A noise rock revolution under the blanket of post-metal and sludge. Sometimes their rock is old school orientated, other times is more modern than anyone else’s tries. This is a great inspired album and a fantastic work from the production. A collage of modern ideas and post-rock future glances. A technical and math rock mosaic. I found their music amazing. High-toned sounds and a noise continuous deformation. Tickling music from happy people. Dance in their tones and feel the hit of the summer… find it among these 11 tracks. After several instrumental post-rock releases, my ears get confused and tired, but this band is quite ahead the others.

Austere – To Lay Like Old Ashes
[Eisenwald, 2009]
genre: Depressive Black Metal
Album Review by Edenbeast

Φωνητικά ξεθαμμένα από In the woods στα πρώτα τους βήματα.
