Camera Obscura – My Maudlin Career

Όταν άκουσα το συγκεκριμένο δίσκο των Camera Obscura σκέφτηκα πως έστω και καθυστερημένα έπρεπε κάτι να γράψω γι’ αυτόν.
Όταν σκεφτόμουν όμως τι έπρεπε να γράψω, προβληματίστηκα. Ο λόγος; Τι το διαφορετικό και πρωτότυπο έχουν σα μπάντα για να το γράψω και να προσπαθήσω να πείσω κάποιον να ακούσει το δίσκος; Πόσες και πόσες μπάντες υπάρχουν σε αυτό το στυλ, δηλαδή ευγενικές pop μελωδίες σε συνδυασμό με “Lovely” φωνητικά; Προχωρώντας ακόμα περισσότερο τη σκέψη μου έφτασα στο σημείο να αμφισβητήσω το ίδιο το μουσικό μου γούστο για την pop μουσική και στο τέλος μπερδεύτηκα και συγχύστηκα.
Μετά πάτησα πάλι το play, το “French Navy” άρχισε να παίζει, και ασυναίσθητα ψιλοκουνήθηκα στο ρυθμό του. Ότι με είχε συγχύσει , μπερδέψει και με είχε κάνει να τους αμφισβητήσω χάθηκε πριν τελειώσει το κομμάτι. Τότε κατάλαβα πραγματικά γιατί μπάντες σαν τους Camera Obscura (ή τους the pains of being pure at heart επίσης) πραγματικά μου αρέσουν. Προκαλούν αυτή την ευχάριστη εσωτερική γαλήνη και ηρεμία, μια χαρούμενη ατμόσφαιρα και μια γλυκιά μελαγχολία. Ο συγκεκριμένος δίσκος δε, σε κρατάει και σε απορροφάει για 46,5 λεπτά με την απλότητά των συνθέσεών του. Όταν τελειώσει σου αφήνει την αίσθηση ότι το ταξίδι αυτό που έζησες ακούγοντας το δίσκο θα σου λείψει.
Το συνολικό συμπέρασμα σ’ αυτό το παραλήρημα σκέψεων και συναισθημάτων είναι αυτό: Ο δίσκος μπορεί τεχνικά να μην έχει να πει κάτι το τρομερό, η ιδέες του να μην είναι και οι πιο καινοτόμες αλλά κομμάτια σαν το “Swans” το “James” ή το ομώνυμο “My Maudlin career” δύσκολα σε αφήνουν αδιάφορο.

A storm of Light – Forgive Us Our Tresspasses

I met this band some months ago because of a live performance with the post-rock legends Mono
and a split release with drone doom masters Nadja. This is Josh Graham’s project and is related with Battle of Mice, Neurosis, Red Sparowes, Blood & Time, Unsane and Tombs. They record for Neurot Recordings, the label of Neurosis. Joel Hamilton (guitar, wurlitzer, modular synthesizers), Nerissa Campbell (vocals), Jarboe (vocals), Lydia Lunch (spoken word), Carla Kihlstedt (theremin vocals and violin) and Marika Hughes (Cello) are some guests for this album. The music is truly atmospheric and the attitude is post and meta-modern. Their music is really close to Neurosis’ atmospheric parts and Isis’ post era points. Fantastic metal sounds and dark ambient bridges. I am a huge fan of post-metal legends like Neurosis, Isis, Cult of Luna, Pelican etc and I really like experimental joints in metal music, so I think this band could win a great place in my discothèque and in my heart. I am quite sure they already try to gain those. They worth it and their music is step by step, better and better. There is no bad ‘Neurot’ release, so what you are waiting for. Join!

Το βράδυ της Παρασκευής (και του Σαββάτου επίσης) είχαμε την τιμή να έχουμε κοντά μας την ίδια την ιστορία του garage rock’n’roll. Είχαμε την τιμή να μας επισκεφτεί για ένα live ένα συγκρότημα που με τη μουσική του έχει επηρεάσει ολόκληρα μουσικά κινήματα και κομμάτια που έχει γράψει το 1963 ακομα και σήμερα ακούγονται το ίδιο φρέσκα και ζωντανά. Φυσικά αναφέρομαι στους Sonics και την συναυλία τους στο Gagarin205.
Αν κάτι με έκανε να έχω τις αμφιβολίες μου για το συγκεκριμένο live ήταν αν τα χρόνια που έχουν περάσει (οι ίδιοι κοντεύουν τα 70) , θα επηρέαζαν τη σκηνική τους παρουσία ή αν θα μπορούσαν να αντεπεξέλθουν στο σπιντάτο ρυθμό των κομματιών τους.
Το Gagarin ήταν γεμάτο, και διέκρινα μία τρελή διάθεση γύρω μου. Άκουσα με τη σειρά όλα τα ελληνικά support group που έπαιξαν (Teenheat, The Barbara Farmers, Frantic v ) και πραγματικά δημιούργησαν μία πολύ ωραία ατμόσφαιρα και μία χορευτική διάθεση. Ιδιαίτερη αναφορά θα κάνουμε στους Frantic v και στους ιδιαίτερα fuzz ήχους τους. Η farfisa τους έπαιζε σε τρελούς ρυθμούς και στο τέλος αποθεώθηκαν από το κοινό, ένα κοινό «ψημένο» και με διάθεση να χορέψει όσο δεν πάει.
Όταν πλέον το κοινό ήταν έτοιμο να καταστραφεί οι Sonics εμφανίστηκαν στη σκηνή μας χαιρέτησαν και ξεκίνησαν με το “He’s waiting”. Από το πρώτο riff το αμέτρητο ξύλο που έφαγα με έκανε να ξεχάσω όλες τις αμφιβολίες μου. Δεν γινόταν να παίζουν πιο δυνατά και χορευτικά. Το κοινό από κάτω παραληρούσε στο άκουσμα όλων των μεγάλων κομματιών τους . Αν μπορούσε κανείς να δει το χώρο του Gagarin από ψηλά δεν θα διέκρινε ούτε ένα σημείο του χώρου που να μην υπήρχε άνθρωπος να χορεύει. Όσο πιο «χιτάτα» κομμάτια τόσο πιο μεγάλος ο ενθουσιασμός του κοινού.
Το set των Sonics περιλάμβανε όλες τις μεγάλες τους επιτυχίες από το Cinderella μέχρι τo Psycho και το Witch με το οποίο έκλεισαν και τη συναυλία. Ανάμεσα στα κομμάτια που έπαιξαν ήταν και δύο από τον δίσκο που θα κυκλοφορήσουν σύντομα, τα οποία αν και άγνωστα μας ικανοποίησαν με το heavy garage ρυθμό τους.
Τι μου έμεινε από τη συναυλία; Η τρομερή ενέργεια και όρεξη του κοινού, ο μπασίστας Don Wilhelm που ήταν μια τρομερή μορφή και τέλος ένα παράπονο γιατί δεν έπαιξαν την τρομερή διασκευή τους στο Do you love me?.

The duo from Bristol, UK strikes again one year after the fantastic “Street Horrrsing”. This time the album’s title is “tarot sport” and if someone liked them from their previous album he will going to love them with this one.
Their success allows them to feel free and introduce more noise electronica in their music. From the opening song “Surf Solar”, Fuck Buttons start their travel to their noisy sound. It’s not an experimental electronic album it’s post electronic album, full of noisy compositions. They seem more confident and ready to show their real music, their real talent.
The album sounds really autumnal. I believe that they decide to issue it the perfect time. The depression atmosphere that is produced is transmitted directly to the listener. It’s fucking raining outside and you want to enjoy it with a cup of coffee in your house, watching the rain from the window. Then the rain stops and the rainbow appears. Enjoy it with “Phantom Limp”!
Fuck buttons are fucking amazing. If their mood attracts you, you will easily fall in love with them. I already am.

Shrine means altar, it means temple, so these guys are pretend to be builders of a temple? They construct a fane? Yes they do! It’s a fucking alternative doom metal supergroup featuring Scott “Wino” Weinrich (Saint Vitus, The Obssessed, Place of Skulls, Spirit Caravan, The Hidden Hand), Scott Kelly (Neurosis, Tribes of Neurot, Blood & Time), Al Cisneros (Sleep, Om, Asbestosdeath, the Sabians), and Dale Crover (Melvins, Porn, Fantomas, Altamont, Nirvana). They get the idea for the band name; I think so, from an ‘Om’ song title, released as split record with Current 93. What do you expect from this band when you read these names and these bands they use to play? Nothing more than a superfreaking heavy metal act. And this is it! A doomy, dirty and noisy metal. A modern kind of doom and stoner metal. This is the dirtiest version of sludge metal. This is ‘Sleep’ meets ‘Om’ and ‘Melvins’ deal with ‘Neurosis’. Pitchfork wrote “Neurosis + Sleep + Melvins + Wino = Shrinebuilder” and I agree. Shrinebuilder is a brilliant affectation in hypnosis or trance… As long tracks drift into one another, sharing themes and sequence, it’s really easy to mislead into a waking dream. They share the vocal leading and that makes every song totally different. The difference is in the atmosphere and the doom attitude. This mini album is really heavy but at the same time so stoned and melodic; and I think these records bring slow metal in a new dimension. This is a compilation of new sounds bring out from Sleep, Sloth and Spirit Caravan. There is a psychedelic or something like space rock caprice around a desert and stoner rock atmosphere. This project is fresh over a traditional old school music.

Porcupine tree – The Incident

I am not a huge fan of Porcupine Tree, but I really believe that they already wrote some of the best songs in the music history. I always enjoy their releases and some times I get stuck with some tracks of them. I have no bad words about them, I think they are genius musicians and they do keep progressive art music alive. The distribution of the songs of ‘the Incident’ is a little weird. Clearly the epic track “The Incident,” is intended to be the focal point, but in doing so, the 4 tracks on the second disc, which together comprise all of twenty minutes plus change, make them feel almost like afterthoughts. Compared to the sprawling fifty-five minutes of disc one, disc two comes off as something more like a bonus EP. Like ‘Opeth’ PT also join Roadrunner records. I think that the album ‘In Absentia’ is far away the others and most of the times when you listen to a ‘Porcupine Tree’ release you are excited but you get used to it really quick. You get bored after some hearings, but you can’t really refer this to a bad track or an uninfluenced composition. Wilson never ends; his mind is like a river, producing water ideas. I do enjoy also this record , I really like the 55 min of first disc as a whole track and I prefer “Drawing the line”, “the Incident”, “Time Flies”, “Bonnie the cat” and “Remember me lover”.

Plus Dots – Driven by an Unholy Desire

The story of Plus Dots started back in 2001 in Athens, Greece. The first two years of their music career, were a four member hardcore punk band. In 2003, two saxophonists were added in the line –up and this fact turned their music in a more ska –punk, reggae-punk style. With this line –up they gave a lot of live performances. In 2007, Plus Dots record their debut EP “Give Me One Kick Start Beat for Breakfast” in Feedback sounds record label. In this EP their hardcore punk pastness met their new ska punk style and created a music mix that we had never heard before. That year they decided to make some experiments with their sound, so they added a trumpet player in their line-up. These 2 years made them more mature to create their own sound, a mix of ska and reggae punk with some swing elements and of course with Oi and street punk influences as well. Year 2009 is a landmark year in the history of Plus dots as they had their first live shows around Europe. During this year they made two European tours, one in Central Europe playing in festivals and clubs during the summer and one in the Balkans during this month. This year also they produced their first full length album named “Driven by unholy desire”. I have listened to the album and even if I’m not a reggae fan I have to admit that the guys are really really good. In the first two songs, “My war” and “Morning”, trumpet and saxophones create a happy and dancing atmosphere. These songs have a reggae punk style with trumpet and saxophone riffs that stack in your head. “65”, the song that follows, it’s a ska-punk composition that continues the party. It’s a heavy song with great drums and real punk guitars which transformed into a more dancing ska-punk beat. The guys wanted to show us that they didn’t forget their music past with “EMS” an instrumental song: great punk rock guitar and a fantastic bass and drum rhythm section. The songs that I’m really stacked with are “Blame Authority” and “Time is up”. Everything in these songs is perfectly combined. The first one starts with a slow melody but with quick and crazy drums, then it gets crazy with a fantastic trumpet riff and a guitar string violation which is really hardcore punk. The second one impressed me with the way that is transformed from a reggae song into hardcore punk then to ska punk and back to reggae. “Victim” and “Dedication” are songs that could be perfect to start a live performance. Heavy, fast, with drums which change three rhythms in a row and pure hardcore vocals that are saying to you: tonight we will gonna to have a fucking good time. The closing song “Years ‘n’ years” is band’s goodbye to their audience.
Anyone that followed Plus dots these years could easily realize that they made a big effort and they are really developed as a band, especially the singer Nikos Fenerlis that tried to changed his accent which was one of band’s disadvantages in the past. The idea of adding the trumpet sound to their music was totally correct. Nikitas, the trumpet player, knows very well how to play this instrument. Mitch, the drummer, finally set free his proper talent. Chris, the guitar player, keeps the balance between the punk rock violence and the ska sounds of the saxophones and the trumpet.
Finally, I have to congratulate Feedback sound for the production which is more than good for the old standards and Aris p for making this mysterious and dark artwork.

I didn’t know ‘Future of the left’ before this album and I am really sad. That’s why I get disappointed when I first listened to this album, an album that has everything: hardcore, punk, garage punk, and noise.
“Arming Eritrea” introduce us to their heavy sound. Speed post-hardcore, shredded guitars and evil voices. That was what make me want more and more. Then I listen to “The Hope that the house Built”. This song was a masterpiece!! It was just like listening the modern version of Shellac.
In the next three songs I adored the bassist, Kelson Louis Tregurtha. The way that he is playing his bass, destroys me. The whole songs are based in his playing direction. My pleasure arrived to the maximum possible when I listened to “You Need Satan More Than He Needs You”. This is what we call POST-HARDCORE. It is the perfect combination of jetted guitars, noisy vocals, killing bass and psychotic drums.The next two songs are pure dirty garage punk songs. Especially “Stand by Your Manatee” which starts with the most possible noisy guitars. This album doesn’t have a bad song. Once you listen to it you want more and more. I want to choose my favorite song, after a lot of thought, I choose “Drink Nike”. The reason? The scream “Smile-alalalalalalalalalalala. Smile-alalalalalalalalalalala. Smile-alalalalalalalalalalala. Smile-lalalalalalalalala. Smile! Smile! is what comes first in my mind when I ‘m referring to this band.

What comes after the ‘Station’ album? ‘Geneva’ and it is better. It is more than better. It is huge. I was expecting their 3rd release, and I think I am pretty satisfied with this album. This period of time (autumn) a post-rock album, atmospheric as this one, is the most appropriate sound to listen. The band creates heavy rock and ambient metal compositions which stuck in my mind. Fantastic progression in their music structure, excellent sounds and a more metal attitude than ever before. I need some more listens to understand this one, but I am already pretty sure that this album is quite close to my music taste, and their post-rock is better than ever before. Fans of GY!BE, mogwai, Isis, Pelican, Porcupine Tree, Pain of Salvation will appreciate this. ‘Geneva’ is the most progressive album of them and I think this style is better than before, because in all these myriads of albums around post-rock, you need something fresh and different to make it favourite.

Sonic Youth Live In London, UK @ HMV Forum 23/10/2009

Περιμένοντας υπομονετικά στην ουρά να ανοίξουν οι πόρτες του Forum για να μπω μέσα και να δω για 5η φορά στη ζωή μου τους Sonic Youth, σκεφτόμουν αν πλέον ο λόγος που πηγαίνω στα live τους είναι η ανάγκη που έχω απλά να βλέπω από κοντά πόσο καλά «στέκονται» μετά από 30 χρόνια παρουσίας ή αν πραγματικά πάω για να δω μια νέα μουσική πτυχή τους. Την απάντηση μου την έδωσαν οι ίδιοι μετά από μερικές ώρες.
Εμφανίστηκαν στη σκηνή για άλλη μία φορά όσο πιο cool γίνεται. Αυτή τη φορά νομίζω ότι η λατρευτή Kim όμως το παράκανε με την τουαλέτα που επέλεξε να φορέσει (δείτε Φώτο). Μας χαιρέτησαν και ξεκίνησαν όπως ακριβώς περίμενα με το “Sacred Trickster” το πιο χιτάτο κομμάτι του ολοκαίνουργιου δίσκου the Eternal. Ο κόσμος ενθουσιάστηκε και άρχισε σιγά – σιγά να κινείται στο ρυθμό του κομματιού. Ακολούθησαν άλλα δύο κομμάτια από τον καινούργιο δίσκο τους τα “No way” και “Calming the snake”. Ήταν μία καλή εισαγωγή στην μουσική τους και να ανάψουν το κέφι.
Εκεί που δεν το περίμενα μας γύρισαν πίσω στο 1987 και το “Stereo Sanctity”. Όλοι αρχίσαμε να ουρλιάζουμε από ενθουσιασμό. Εγώ προσωπικά ξετρελάθηκα και ξέφυγα. Τα διάφορα σπρωξίδια γύρω μου επιβεβαίωσαν ότι στην ίδια κατάσταση ήταν και ο υπόλοιπος κόσμος. Από τα καλύτερα συναυλιακά κομμάτια τους. Δυστυχώς όμως το κομμάτι που επέλεξαν για να συνεχίσουν (Walkin’ Blue από το Eternal) αν και καλό, δεν ήταν της ίδιας έντασης και το κοινό ξενέρωσε απότομα. Το κενό της έντασης άρχισαν να το αναπληρώνουν λίγο – λίγο με τα “Poison Arrow” και “Anti-Orgasm” για να επέλθει δεύτερος γύρος χοντρού ξύλου με το “Hey Joni” οπού ο Lee το έκανε να μοιάζει όσο πιο hardcore γίνεται. Από εκείνο το σημείο και μέχρι το προτελευταίο κομμάτι του main set υπήρχε μία διαρκής ένταση μιας κι έπαιξαν σε πολύ πιο γρήγορους και δυνατούς ρυθμούς τα κομμάτια του καινούργιου δίσκου καθώς και μια άλλη μεγάλη αγάπη από τα παλιά το “White Cross”. Έκλεισαν το set με το τελευταίο κομμάτι του Eternal “Massage the History”. Η εκτέλεση του κομματιού μου άρεσε πολύ περισσότερο από ότι στο δίσκο, αξίζει δε να σημειωθεί ότι για πρώτη φορά στα χρονικά ο μεγάλος και αεικίνητος Thurston αναγκάστηκε να κάτσει σε καρέκλα σε live για να παίξει την ακουστική του κιθάρα. Μόλις το κομμάτι τελείωσε όλοι μας ουρλιάζαμε. Είχαν καταφέρει να ενθουσιάσουν όλο το κοινό που είχε γεμίσει ασφυχτικά το Forum(η συναυλία ήταν sold out).
‘Έχοντας ακούσει 10 από τα 12 κομμάτια του καινούργιου δίσκου ήξερα ότι στο encore θα ακούγαμε ένα pot puree από όλα τα μεγάλα hit. Το κοινό είχε ανάψει και τα περίμενε εξάλλου. Οι Sonic Youth βγήκαν στη σκηνή και ξεκίνησαν με το “Tom Violence”. Μας κατέστρεψαν. Από αυτό το σημείο και για άλλα 3 κομμάτια των δύο encore τους η παράνοια, το ξύλο τα σπρωξίδια ο ενθουσιασμός ήταν οι αντιδράσεις του κοινού. Οι ίδιοι φαινόταν ότι το γούσταραν επίσης και αποφάσισαν να σπιντάρουν όσο πιο πολύ μπορούσαν. To “Cross the Breeze” παίχτηκε στην πιο hardcore punk εκδοχή του, το “What we know” το έκαναν να μοιάζει σαν κομμάτι του “Daydream Nation” και τέλος o μεγαλύτερος συναυλιακός μου πόθος: “Death Valley 69”. Εκεί πλέον δεν με ένοιαζε τίποτα. Ούτε καν οι ενοχλητικές αγκωνιές του πίσω μου στην πλάτη για να πάρει τη θέση μου στα κάγκελα. Η εκτέλεση του ήταν α π ί σ τ ε υ τ η. Μετά από αυτό μπορούσαν πλέον να μας καληνυχτίσουν όπως κι έκαναν.
Στα αρνητικά της συναυλίας ότι αναλώθηκαν πολύ στο Eternal και η μεγαλύτερη ειρωνεία ότι δεν έπαιξαν από τον δίσκο μόνο το αγαπημένο μου κομμάτι “ Thunderclap for Bobby Pyn ”. Επίσης το στραμπουλιγμένο μου πόδι που ακόμα με ταλαιπωρεί.
Στα θετικά; Οι απορίες που αναφέρω στην αρχή του κειμένου λύθηκαν. Θέλω να βλέπω τους Sonic Youth γιατί απλά κάνουν τεράστια live. Θα συνεχίσω να τους βλέπω και να τους ακολουθώ στα live τους για πάντα.

Θα αποφύγω χαρακτηρισμούς για τον χώρο, την διοργάνωση και τον ήχο, για να μην αναλωθώ σ’ αυτά, αφού οι συνθήκες, η τήρηση του ωραρίου και οι ηχητικές δυνατότητες του υπόγειου που λέγεται Rodeo κατάφεραν να με ξενερώσουν ιδιαίτερα. Ευτυχώς που υπάρχουν καλλιτέχνες και μπάντες σαν αυτές που είδαμε χτες και κίνησαν το ενδιαφέρον μου, καθώς διασκέδασαν και διασκεύασαν την διάθεση μου.
Το πρώτο project που εμφανίστηκε, που ήταν ουσιαστικά το the Happiness Project του Charles Spearin (βασικός μπασιστας των DMST), είναι ο ορισμός της concept μπάντας. Στην μια κυκλοφορία που έχουν, και παρουσίασαν εχτές, ακολουθούν κάποια ηχογραφημένα λόγια παιδιών και γειτόνων του Charles, οι οποίοι προσπαθούν να ορίσουν την ευτυχία, και πατώντας στην μουσικότητα τον λόγων και των φωνών, παράγουν νότες που ακολουθούν ακριβώς το μουσικό μονοπάτι της ομιλίας και της εκάστοτε φωνής. Μια Jazz πειραματική απόδοση όμορφων μελωδιών. Ιδιαίτερα ενδιαφέρων υλικο και κατά βάθος παρά πολύ γλυκό
Το δεύτερο project που εμφανίστηκε στην συνέχεια, οι Years, είναι ουσιαστικά ο Ohad Benchetrit (δεύτερος κιθαρίστας των DMST). Και αυτός όπως πριν και ο Charles εμπλουτίζει τον ήχο του με την βοήθεια των υπόλοιπων της κολεκτίβας. Εδώ μιλάμε για επαναλαμβανόμενες αιθέριες post-rock συνθέσεις οι οποίες ξεκίναγαν ιδιαίτερα χαμηλά και ηλεκτρακουστικα και ανά σημεία κατέληγαν σε μια μελωδική φασαρία.
Τελικά, κι αφού έχει πάει 12 η ώρα…, έφτασε η στιγμή ν’ ανέβει στην σκηνή ο Justin Small, (μιας και ήταν ο μοναδικός που νομίζω δεν είχε συμμετάσχει στα 2 support, side project, που είδαμε νωρίτερα), και οι Do Make Say Think ήταν εν απαρτία μπροστά μας (με καινουργιο δισκο στις βαλιτσες, the other truths). Αυτό που περίμενα και είχα δει και το 2003, ήταν πάλι μπροστά μου, 2 drummer χωρίς λόγο ύπαρξης –ταυτόχρονα- (ο ένας θα έφτανε), και μια απίστευτα δουλεμένη μπάντα από μπροστά. Ένα πειραματικό και εναλλακτικό rock με άπειρους jazz αυτοσχεδιασμους. Τρομπέτες, ένα απίστευτο βιολί, σαξόφωνο και πλήκτρα. Μπάσο που κελαηδούσε και διάφορες κιθάρες που άλλοτε σε χάζευαν κι άλλοτε ήταν έτοιμες να ρίξουν τα θεμέλια του μαγαζιού. Είχαν κέφια, ήταν αρκετά χαρούμενοι και ξεκούραστοι, αφού κοιμήθηκαν κι ένα βράδυ καθως εχτές δεν ταξίδευαν για τον επομενο σταθμό τους (καθότι 2 εμφανίσεις στην Αθήνα). Η μουσική τους μαγική, το πειραματικό rock που μας εχει λείψει, μακριά και διαφορετικό από όλες αυτές τις αντίγραφες του μοντέρνου και θορυβώδους rock που ξεπηδούν συνεχώς. Ένας ορισμός το τι είναι θόρυβος και ένα μάθημα το πώς συνδέουμε την μελωδία με την φασαρία και πως συνθέτουμε πάνω σε jazz δρόμους, 10 και πλέον όργανα επί σκηνής. Πραγματικά υπέροχοι.

Hush arbors – Yankee reality

“Hush arbors” are actually one person, Keith Wood, a musician from Virginia, USA, accompanied by a band that performs his songs. His music is folk with some psychedelic pop influences. We can say that this music is in general what we call Americana. This is their second album in Thurston Moore’s record label Ecstatic Peace. J Mascis (guitarist and singer of the Dinosaur jr) is the producer of the album who also plays drums and guitar on a few tracks. This fact, made them sound more 90’s and more indie than their previous album especially in the songs that he is playing.
The album has 3 different sounds:
• Their original sound in seven out of 10 songs of the album. Slow pop melodies, romantic songs that reminds me my school period. Songs that I wanted to listen when I was in love. Songs that I wanted to listen and thinking about my love.
• The bouncy pop sound that “Lisbon” has. This is the most mainstream song of the album. It’s happy, it’s noisy and it’s a very nice song for a dance party.
• The Dinosaur jr’s sound that the last songs of the album have. These are the songs where J Mascis is playing. Songs that could have been Dinosaur jr’s tracks if Wood was more heavy.
I don’t believe that this album is a masterpiece. Although, I believe that it’s a nice and an easy album to listen.

“The end of the ocean” create sweat rock in an instrumental and an ambient point of view. Four tracks of heavy and tied experimental and modern rock under the illusion of an ambient and atmospheric background. A hallucinatory music from a promising band.

Nuggies a have a released a new ep entitled The Sound of Explosions from the Northeast . The EP is being released by Gorilla Ointment and is also being distributed for free via the internet.
This is an intelligent and quite experimental electronica band with a noise rock profile. This record is strongly experimental and the tracks are totally weird. Their music is strange and the compositions are an extreme version of melodic music.
Check out also the album of them “Native American President”. Their music is the definition of abstract.

GIARDINI DI MIRO – IL FUOCO

“Il fuoco” (the fire) was a silent movie directed by Giovanni Pastrone in 1915.
The municipal cultural club of Regio Emilia, the province of Italy where ‘Giardini’ are coming from, proposed them to make the soundtrack for this movie in a live performance in the town. Giardini accepted this challenge and “il fuoco” was firstly presented live in January 14th in the city of Reggio Emilia. (here is the link for the live show in Athens 06/02/09)The band was performing their music live while the movie was screened in the background. The success of this performance made them start a tour through Italy to perform “il fuoco”. Then they decided to get into a studio and make “il fuoco” their 4th official album. The album has three parts as many as the film has too: “La favilla”, “La vampa” and “La cenere”. “La favilla” sounds like the introduction to the movie. It’s a mix of ambient and slow – sensitive post rock, especially the second song (La favilla 2) that sounds like the introduction in the story. As the story goes on, the music gets more heavy till the last song “La favilla 7” where the heavy drums show the panic and fear before the catharsis of the last minute of the song. “La vampa” is the most tensed and more interesting part of the album. It starts slowly, in the same rhythm that “la favilla” left us. Then after 3-4 minutes becomes noisier till we arrive to the most interesting song of the album “La Vampa 2”. I suppose that the most interesting and most seditious part of the movie is in this part. “La cenere” is like the end of a drama. It’s the most ambient and slow part. The drama’s prominence has past and we are in the part where the characters are ready to say goodbye to the spectators. Giardini di Miro’s new album is an album that cannot be judged from someone that hasn’t seen the movie. (link for Giardini’s last album: Giardini Di Miro – Dividing Opinions (Homesleep,2007) ) That’s why I will not do it as well. I will only express my admiration to their composures.

This is the debut album for this Polish band. The band is the brainchild of the duo Michal Sliwa and Jarek Lesklewicz, who perform all instruments, samples and production. They perform really well and their metal is quite experimental. Their mood is dark, experimental and doomy. Their music is really interesting and I found some special and really inspired sounds inside their compositions. This album is ambitious and this band is promising. The music is full of ambient soundscapes and there is a fantastic drone atmosphere. This band is trying to go forward and the atmosphere is dark like the most of these kind of artists but its much more creative than others so it makes the 76 minutes pass really easy. The release is in 500 copies limited CD digipack edition. Their sound is psychedelic, I can’t really describe it as a metal release, but the doom metal and drone metal influence is the strongest around. The album mastered by James PLotkin (Isis, Khanate, Pelican). Fantastic fresh and influenced modern kind of slow metal. Try to listen to this band and found out this release to buy it. I can say this album is one of the best among the others in this experimental and modern kind of drone doom metal. Fantastic sounds, I said that again but there are fantastic sounds spreading around the album. Fantastic point of view, Releases of a great combination between metal and ambient sounds. I am proud of them.

The Jim Jones Revue – Here to Save Your Soul (Singles Volume 1)

“The Jim Jones Revue” is a noise garage band from London. They sound really dirty and it’s obvious that they are trying to play rockabilly in the noisiest way. This album is a collection of some singles released by the group, singles that was very difficult to find as most of them run out, together with two new rock ’n’ roll tracks. The album starts with “Rock ‘n’ Roll Psychosis” their first single ever and its b-side “Big Hunk O’ love” cover of the classical Elvis song, Two Napalm bombs that explode the speakers (and your ears as well). “Cement mixer” and its b-side “Little Richard’s, “Good Golly Miss Molly” continue the album. Even if “Cement mixer” is less speedy it’s very heavy garage song. “Good Golly Miss Molly” couldn’t sound heavier than it sounds here. It reminds me the Guitar Wolf cover of “summertime blues”. “Princess & the frog” is the opening song and the first single of their first album. The piano solos remind Jerry Lee Lewis style but in a more modern and strong way. Its b-side “Freak Of Nature” it’s a rock ‘n’ roll dance song. “Burning your House down “and “Elemental” are two new songs. The first one is a garage blues song. It has classic blues rhythm and dirty garage vocals. “Elemental” is the goodbye explosion in a ‘Chuck Burry’ way. If you want to have your first contact with “the Jim Jones Revue”, I strongly believe that this collection is the best way to do it.

8:40 μπαίνω στο Gagarin. Πάω καρφί στο bar να πάρω μια μπύρα γιατί από τον κόσμο που έβλεπα ήμουν σίγουρος ότι αυτή θα ήταν η μοναδική μου ευκαιρία να το προσεγγίσω. Κατά τις 9 εμφανίζονται στη σκηνή οι SadDoLLs. Η μουσική που παίζανε ήταν ξεκάθαρη απ τα πρώτα 10 δευτερόλεπτα που τους άκουσα. dark – gothic metal. Μου φάνηκαν συμπαθητικοί αλλά σίγουρα δεν πρόκειται για κάτι το ιδιαίτερο. Μου άρεσε πολύ το πόσο το διασκεδάζανε πάνω στη σκηνή, είχαν χεστεί απ τη χαρά τους. Μετά ακολούθησαν οι Poem. Εδώ σίγουρα πρόκειται για κάτι το πολύ ιδιαίτερο. Η μουσική τους χώραγε πολλά είδη, progressive, death, thrash, metalcore, ακούγονταν δηλαδή σαν μια σύγχρονη, φτασμένη, σκληρή, τεχνική μπάντα. Μπορώ να πω ότι με ενθουσίασαν. Φοβεροί παιχταράδες όλοι τους και οι φωνητικές ικανότητες του frontman τους εντυπωσιακές.
Κατά τις 10:30 έφτασε η στιγμή που όλοι περιμέναμε. Με μια γρήγορη ματιά γύρω μου κατάλαβα ότι στο Gagarin δεν χώραγε ούτε άνθρωπος παραπάνω. Εμφανίζονται οι Paradise lost. Πάνε πια οι κυριλέ εμφανίσεις μόνο ο μπασιστας φόραγε πουκάμισο. Machintosh και Holmes φόραγαν κάτι αμανικες φανέλες και γενικά όλοι εκτός του μπασιστα σκάσανε τέρμα μεταλλαδες κάφροι. Ένιωσα συγκίνηση απ την εμφάνιση τους. Τη συγκίνηση διαδέχτηκε ο αιφνιδιασμός γιατί με το που ξεκινάνε να παίζουν βρέθηκα 5 μέτρα μακριά απ το σημείο που καθόμουνα απ το πολύ ξύλο. Μεγάλη πώρωση, παντού πέφτανε κορμιά. Ο Holmes έδειχνε εκστασιασμένος απ την γηπεδικη ατμόσφαιρα που επικρατούσε και πραγματικά τα δώσε όλα. Εδώ το παλικάρι τραγούδησε σε 2-3 κομμάτια brutal και μου φύγε η μαγκιά. Ειδικά στο Eternal. Την παράσταση όμως την έκλεψε ο Machintosh η απόλυτη metal μορφή. Δε σταμάτησε το headbanging ούτε λεπτό, φώναζε στον κόσμο που ήταν μπροστά του, τραγούδαγε, σε κάτι φάσεις ούρλιαζε μόνος του, είχε τρελαθεί τελείως. Από την light περίοδο τους παίξανε μόνο το one second, το say just words και το erased όλα τα άλλα ήταν βαριά κομμάτια. Ήταν η δεύτερη φορά που τους έβλεπα εγώ αλλά άκουσα απ τον διπλανό μου που τους είχε δει 5 φορές να λέει ότι αυτή ήταν η καλύτερη. Δεν είχα λόγο να μην τον πιστέψω.

I think this is the sixth time I wrote for this band only this year (2009). And this is the 8th or the 9th release of them for 2009. What else to say, collaborations, compilations, live, old covers, full length albums, 12”inch, EP, remixes and singles. This album is actually the official 2009 full length release of Baker. All the previous ones are covers, or compilations or live releases, so I think we have to pay attention to this one. This is a double disc release. Darkness and wind… There are cello, violin, harmonium, sitar and piano inside the compositions in this release. This is the greatest of all. This is the modern noise metal. Drone till death. Satanic vibes, fantastic terror atmosphere and voices around my brain. Their music is screaming in my head. I think this is one of the best ever nadja releases. This is progressive music. Oh my Lord, this is a masterpiece. I think this is the best ever ambient – drone metal release. I just love it from the first hearing. Excellent. A disc full of metal and drone doom strings and the second one trully experimental and ethereal ambient.

Pelican – What We All Come to Need

When I’ve listened “City Of Echoes 2007 release – click here to check this album” I said that there is something missing from the band, something about the atmosphere, something about the structure. I think they just found it in this release. That difference and this transformation is already been done in the “EP Ephemeral 2009 release – click here to check this ep” and I am truly excited! In this 4th full length album record for the band there are some guest musicians like Greg Anderson (Sunn O), Aaron Turner (Isis), Ben Verellen (Harkonen) and Helms Alee and Allen Epley (The Life & Times and Shiner). The atmosphere is a bit heavier and the tracks combine this stoner style, with a heavy metal approach and a post-rock smell. Their modern metal is unique, alternative and quite dirty. This album is smoked and followed by tones of headbanging. The rhythm section of ‘What We All Come to Need’ is colorful and progressive. Excellent guitars, heavy drums and noisy dimension around the compositions. This album could be compared with their masterpiece and maybe unreachable ‘Australasia’. I said a lot of times before that Pelican are among the establishers of modern metal, of this kind of post-metal Isis, Cult of Luna, Melvins and Neurosis trying to play and with this record they prove that they are still in the front line. Fantastic riffs! Excellent music! This is the kind of smart, contemporary and up-to-date metal music. Fall 2009 will see Pelican presenting their new album in the live setting once again, first with a full U.S. tour scheduled to start late October. They will be joined, among others, by Disappearer (2009 release the clearing – click here to check) and Black Cobra , the latter of which also sees a fall release for their new album “chronomega”(click here to check the album) on Southern Lord.

Black Cobra spoils the poison of sludge metal in my veins. The band absorbs the energy of stoner rock, the dirty atmosphere of sludge, the metal attitude of doom and the modern concept of alternative post-metal. The duo, with guitarist/vocalist Jason Landrian and drummer Rafael Martinez who played for ‘Cavity’, ‘Acid King’ and ‘16’ create a powerful release and the record it for on of my favourite labels “Southern Lord”. Remember ‘Boris’, ‘Sunn’, ‘Khanate’, ‘Pelican’, ‘Weedeater’, ‘Earth’ and ‘Om’ from this label. My head is going to explode. This album is really heavy. These guys have to be in the frontline of modern heavy metal. ‘Mastodon’ and ‘high on fire” are like sissies in front of them. They really surprised me like ‘Zozobra’ last year. Heavy as hell, dirty as mud, raw as a corpse. 38 minutes of unbelievable energetic guitars and noisy drum session.

I do like the music of DMST for some years now and as I said back in 2007 (2007 DMSY release you re a history in rust)they are a band from the old post-rock bands that they do promote this genre and this music style, and they still have a different and an independent music profile that makes them unique. Here we have 4 long tracks full of soundscapes and post-rock energy. Finally ‘Constellation’ release this year, after the “Clues” album, another excellent release. DMST keep the Canadian post rock alive. We really miss this kind of beautiful music, we do miss the noise of their guitars and we miss their atmosphere. “Other truths” is unreachable and awesome, if you like post rock music you just have to have this one. There is a jazz style behind this record and their rock is more ambient than ever before. There is a lo-fi rhythm and an experimental attitude over the compositions. A breeze is freezing your chicks and the sand of the desert hits your eyes, just close them and an-other truth can be in front of your mind eyes. Don’t be fool, stop your imagination and let them to take you away. A classic post-rock album in front of your ears.

“Let the dominoes fall” is the seventh album from the California based punk rock band Rancid. It came out after 6 years from their previous release and a new drummer Branden Steineckert, who replaced the original line –up member Brett Reed has been added. It also came out when everyone was thinking that this historic band was ready to break up.
When I started to listen to this album I ‘ve beeing quite sure that I will be disapointed in the end. The problem was that I was disapointed from the first songs. After all these years I was hoping that they would have been more mature in their sound, they would stop the aggressive punk melodies that they used to play when they were 20. Indead they continue performing exactly like the way they were performing 20 years ago.
From this music nightmare I think that 3 songs escaped. The introduction song “East Bay Night”, the first single of the album “Last one to Die” and “New Orleans”.
From their previous album I was thinking that was the time for them to break up. I was thinking that they didn’t have anything more to offer in punk music(I recognize of course what they offer in the past). This is my personal opinion and it’s not obligating. Let’s hope that they will realize it or that they are able to confute my beliefs with a much better work in the future.

After the red one this is the blue one, similar artwork, same enthusiasm and the same activity. I was expecting this album for long time. After all these uncertain quality releases around metal, this record is heavy and so progressive. The band has the same direction like in 2007’s ‘red album’ release and produces great compositions. This album is a bit more atmospheric than the previous one, but again the brashness is in high levels and the result is a fully melodic sludge. Lead guitars in an unstoppable riffing direction, screams and shouts in an intense style. Baroness keeps a technical style of playing and a math metal/rock orientation. The album has ups and downs in the rhythm section, there are speed tracks and on the other side there are some more sludgy and doomy. Metal fans will get excited with ‘blue record’ because the metal feeling is really in high standards. Some of the compositions are similar with old style ‘Mastodon’ tracks and maybe with some of the old school ‘Isis’ songs. In some parts of the release the drum section is perfect, other times the guitars reach progressive and art dimensions, but in the end the essential advantage is the energy and the heat which is spreading around the notes of the album. The music structure of the most of the tracks is a scaled technical string leading play. The noise produced and the distortions push the minds to explode. Some bridges they use are the most melodic parts of the album. I think Baroness keep the modern metal in high levels. It is an awesome album with great potential.

Feedback guitars and an Isis join Tool and meet Boris sound!! Some tracks in this album remind me the feelings I had when I first listened to Tool’s awesome tracks from Lateralus and AEnima. Arnold which is the whole band produces an unbelievable clean sound. The music production is fantastic. The album is one of the best progressive releases of the year. I met the project through “Antimomentum” last’s year release , and I was truly excited from the sound, it was for sure one of the best 2008 releases. If you read that post you‘ll understand the kind of music this guy tries to play. Again this year the mix of electronica noise and ambient passages with modern metal and post-rock themes is excellent and really uncommon and innovative. Hopefully, I think this year’s release is far away this GY!BE influenced post-rock he follows last years, and there is an extremely prog and art metal influence spread around, also there is a better music structure and composition of the tracks and his inspiration is admirable. The vocals are strange and actually have a secondary role. It is weird music, but excellent structure and combination of genres, influences and ideas. Sometimes from an ideal slow melody it jumps to thrash metal guitars, scream vocals and progressive metal rhythm section. Other times an ambient noise travels through distorted guitars and over noise rock sections to a modern noisy post-rock. I think the album is perfect.

The British band since the “Paradise lost” album started taking backward steps in their sound. The album “In requiem” confirmed that, but I didn’t actually believed that they can go any heavier than that. I am in the happy position to say that they just did it. ” Faith Divides Us – Death Unites Us” is the heaviest, the darkest, the most doomy goth piece of music they made since “Shades of God”. Nick Holmes is using harsh vocals again. Heavy riffing and heavy drumming are everywhere with some atmospheric parts bringing the melancholy on. Production is nothing but great. After 4 or 5 hearings the smile couldn’t fade. The darkness and melancholy of their early years was here again. I don’t know if I am a bit excessive here but that’s what this album made me feel. Do not miss this one.

Jay Reatard – Watch me fall

Jay Reatard (Jimmy Lee Lindsey) started his career as the front man of the Reatards, a garage – punk band in the end of the 90’s. Through these years he was one of the developers of this music and the Reatards became famous even outside the garage fans’ spectrum. During that period he was having his own projects (The Lost Sounds, The Bad Times etc.) with whom he was playing pure punk music.
The reatards broke up in 2005 and in 2006 he made his first personal record named ”Blood visions” for the ‘in the Red’ record company. In 2008 he signed a contract for ‘Matador Records’ and this year he strikes again with “Watch me fall” his second personal record.
Jay, more mature now, after all these years in music industry, introduces more noise-pop elements to his dirty garage-punk music and transforms his vocal to a “poppy” one. But the energy we feel in every album of him, remains alive, even in this album, and that’s what it’s the most important.
The album opens with “It Ain’t Gonna Save Me” a full of energy song that makes you wanna dance into its rhythm. The best song to start this record as it combines the garage riffs and the Britpop voices. So it’s like saying to us that this is not a typical Reatard album. Then “Before I was caught” , “Man on Steel” and especially “Can’t do it any more” are the songs that confirm his pop change. This change doesn’t mean that there are no pure garage-punk songs. “Faking it” and “Wounded” retained something from his punk years.
There are romantic parts in this album as well. These are the slow songs “I’m watching you” which appears in the middle of the album as a break and “There Is No Sun” which is at the end as a conclusion. Both of them are ‘Black lips’ inspired, garage-rock ballads full of Jay’s lyrics for the way that he is seeing his life.
This album is one of the surprises of the year. Jay himself had said in an interview “I know I won’t be making another record like Watch Me Fall again, this was a record I wanted to make and I needed to make, something I felt artistically driven to do. Now that I’ve made it, I’m on to the next idea.” I’m so excited to see what is next!

“I am you we are” is a new Swedish band and Masquerade is their first well promise ep. Their sound is close to dark music but it’s not exactly darkwave, it’s close to pop but not pop-driven, and of course it’s close to ethnic and world music. I believe that generally the word “experimental” is what really describes it as a music genre. This EP is especially “strange” and I believe that deserves something more than a try. This is not a “normal” band, as they introduce to their music non usual instruments, like the flute, the accordion and the traditional djembe.
The “first song “Love song for the mob” sounds really oriental. The flute that introduces the song surprised me well, as I never really listened to its sound before, but in this song it is the main musical instrument and the composition basis. This introduction was transferring us in a whole different world and time, somewhere in a palace in the Middle East. Then, the contrast between the soft and sweet woman’s vocals and the dark man’s ones impressed me. These vocals were excellent in the whole ep and I really want to congratulate Phoenix Slättner and Anahita Apifera for their talent.
In “Vein” the flute is replaced by the piano which is very well played. In “Killing Time” I noticed the guitar as well which was hidden in the previous songs.
“Elements” was a man piano duo with the flute and some women’s noises in the background.
In the end it is the self titled song where the accordion is used as well. What I really enjoyed in this song, which is my favourite, was the way that was transformed from a soft ballade to an intensive song and then to a fete song. It sounds like saying to us goodbye in a more happy “and see you next time” way. I’ll close this article saying that “I am you we are” deserve at least a record label for the distribution of this ep.

Airpeople – the Golden City

“The Golden City” is the first album of a new German band named “Airpeople”. We are talking about an instrumental “hard” post rock album from a band that is obviously influenced from Tortoise and Mogwai’s music. The names of the tracks are names of some cities from all around the world plus the self titled “Golden City”. It’s like a big travel to the world in 38 minutes. This travel starts from their imaginary “Golden city” that introduces the album. This song is the best song of the album and the more intensive one. The one that shows how they want the city of their life: Full of tense, sentiments and appetence of love. Then the band decides to leave from there to meet other cities, in order to communicate and get more experiences. “Amsterdam”, the first step of the travel, is the groove city, where you go to get destroyed. That’s why the music is more aggressive. “Denver” is the adventure city in the Far west, is the next stop of the travel. In this city they don’t really know what to expect and the fear of the unknown is obvious. “San Juan” is the city to relax and chill-out a little while. They have a long way to go and they have to calm down. They get rid of all these heavy sentiments for a bit and get ready to continue their travel to the world. “Mombassa” is the mysterious city but it’s the city for fun as well. They relaxed and now are ready to have fun in a more oriental way. Then they discover the mysticism of the city. “Le Mans” is chosen for the race. They started it easily and slow and then they have chosen the time to speed up and try to win it. They continued this speed till the last meters where they finished it totally exhausted. “Saigon” is just a stop to find them before going to more familiar cities and finish their trip. It’s the last travel to the unknown. The travel ends in Northern Europe. The cities that were chosen weren’t randomly chosen. “Glasgow” is the capital of their favourite music. They had to pass from there. Then “Stockholm” the city that has this depressed atmosphere. Airpeople with this travel made a very promising beginning. The only advice that I can give them is to play their own sound now. This will allow them to be surer in the travel.

Caïna is a one-man band, from Hampshire/Sussex. Stylistically, it draws from genres as disparate as black and post metal, drone, doom, shoegaze, neofolk and post-rock. I found them back to 2007 with their release Mourner. This Extended Play release is a representable sample of this man’s works. Nice atmospheric soundscapes and a black metal background. The first track climbs the quarters with a modern tickling post rock tone and reaches ambient soundscapes at the end. Second attempt starts with a spastic noisy sound and delivers a black metal growl with a post-metal and noisy drone doom guitar session. Heavy drones and distortions followed by black metal guitar speeds. It is an excellent atmospheric black cry that gives over suddenly and followed by a shoegaze continuant and atmospheric tone. “To Pluck the Night Up by its Skin” is reaching new black metal bands, that combine noise and black and produce an atmospheric post black sound. I think Caina is the only band that reminds me some sounds and attempts of Ulver. Huge rotation of line from black to post and dark ambient music shapes. The last track is a dark ambient myth, with electronica vibes and a rock rhythm section that ends to a huge noise-rock jam. Distorted drone guitars, growls and noises. There is a really dark atmospheric, heavy and very noisy. This guy can mix in an excellent way black and modern kind of metal with ambient and drone. It is worthwhile to try this release. I think it won’t disappoint anyone.

20 Buck Spin’s press release statement said : “The idea for a collaboration between Canada’s prolific neo-doom duo Nadja (check here other Nadja releases) and New Zealand’s pitch black droners Black Boned Angel (check here Verdun 2009 release) was first hatched in conversations between 20 Buck Spin and Nadja’s Aidan Baker around the time Nadja released their Truth Becomes Death EP on Alien8 Recordings in 2006. 20 Buck Spin ran the idea by Campbell Kneale of Black Boned Angel, who at that point was unfamiliar with Nadja. After hearing their material, the complimentary potential was realized, and the groups began their cross-continental collaboration sending music back and forth digitally”, and this is the second attempt of this collaboration after the 2008 release “Christ Send Light”, which was a Jesu like drone doom tracks with experimental vocals. This year’s self tilted collaboration is a bit weirder and I think not that good as the previous one. I think this attempt is a bit more bloated and unfocused. There is a feeling of repeat and the music sound static, unmusical and unvocal. These 2 tracks are a music trip between two continents. I said that because the two bands did not play together and the whole album was constructed by passing sound files back and forth between Canada and New Zealand. Unfortunately this is the problem and the result doesn’t warm me up. As for the sound, it is a fully ambient noise journey, a slow motion core something. It is heavy and massive and sometimes is quite experimental. But I think there are several better releases from both of them this year.

Their first self-titled record was one of the music surprises of last year: Three girls, cute noise –pop music and easy but very nice songs. This year, the girls strike again with an album named “everything goes wrong”. Unfortunately, this is the best title to describe this album when you first hear it. The band tried to become darker and I can say that they failed.
Ok I’m too strict with them as there are two songs that make the difference in this mess that I cannot call an album: “When I ‘m Gone” is the first one, that sounds like the Vivian girls that I knew from their previous album, and the ending song is the second one, the romantic “Before I start to cry”.
I will end my review with my personal query: After the success of their previous album, why were they in such a haste to create their new album?

The French metal scene is one of the best in the world. The modern metal scene, even with black metal, sludge or hardcore and post music bands is truly in very high standards in this central European country. This band, which is actually a project and this is their first ever release as a 4 track extended play cd. Their music is similar with Overmars, Rosetta, Russian Circles, Cult of Luna and Isis. A modern kind of metal, fulfilled with electronics and ambient noises, under screams and harsh vocals and over the huge guitars and bass lines(followed by endless distortions). Heavy metal with a meta modern approach. This is the new European metal point of view. I think this band can be the leader in the genre. I think these 4 tracks are some of the best ever tracks in the genre of sludge metal, in this dirty and noisy part of hardcore metal. Excellent ambient metal, a dream mix of doom metal, ambient electronica, hardcore, epic metal, black metal and experimental noise. This music is not an encyclopedia of genres; it is a collage of my best dreams. This is the most atmospheric (also dirty, sludgy, dreamy and inspired) hardcore release the last years. Excellent blackish vocals, over noisy doom riffs, under electronic noises from the background and an unbelievable music structure. Try to buy it. It could be classic.

That’s the third album for Gorod and I can say I’ve been expected this kind of album from a Swedish band, but these French surprised me in a really positive way. A fantastic uber-technical death metal album. The album is full of crazy riffing and crazy drumming, they are just amazing players. The vocals are pure death, brutal style. Not an easy album to get into. Some melodic riffs and some clean vocals will help you not get dizzy and make it more understandable. The production is great. There are some parts with cool blast beating which made me ecstatic. This album is a bomb for your ears. Be careful.

This release includes a remaking/reworking of some of Aidan Baker’s solo works. Actually is a kind of cover’s in older songs of him. The release is limited in 500 copies. I think Nadja is the only band that can cover their songs… it is clever and quite interesting. The atmosphere of all the remakes is under a strong and heavy drone sound. Recommended only to fans. Great atmospheric drone doom tracks, under a dark and doom ambient soundscape. I do not have more to say, it is one of the 8 2009 releases of the band:

Monolith is a very good instrumental post-rock album. A well constructed atmospheric progressive rock with some heavier strokes of the brush. Their music is like a collage of sounds hover over a caravan in the middle of an African desert. Birds and insects fly all over the place and small earthquakes shake the ground. There are metal guitar bridges and an unstoppable scalar music progression. The compositions have an excellent rhythm section based on a huge bass line and experimental post-metal drum sessions. The band is “a collective.” Guitarists Adam Scarborough and Chris Roberts, electric bass players Josh Kinsey and Mike Crew, and drummer Dan Elsen, each function as equals in the band—both in the process of songwriting and on stage. That means that the band is a tied set. This quintet works really well together and they jam pretty well! The album is quite atmospheric and the music reach music scales of pink floyd, mogwai, do make say think, jethro tull and porcupine tree.

I’ve listened that this will be the last attempt from the band…?… This album will be the last… Anyway, this is another band reform. 5 years after their previous release they are back together in order to release the “Heart of Darkness”. BbtS is a legendary band; they mix modern hardcore metal with grind and heavy metal roots. They produce the most sludgy ever metalcore. This album explains what metalcore is in our days. This release can really describe how a good band can play heavy and in a metallic way music, but under a huge melodic background. Burnt by the Sun are the masters of melodic metalcore, this album could be huge! Their work in guitars is excellent and these compositions are really heavy. The vocalist is screaming, screeching, whispering all along. My mind get crazy, this album is detonating. This is not music this is a volcano! Lava and slag gets out of my speakers. Half an hour is more than enough… 34 minutes of heavy, unstoppable, unreachable hardcore metal. Enjoy!

Two years ago was their amazing start (click here to check ) . Now with the “exploding head” ‘a place to bury strangers’ continue their music exactly from the point that they stop in their previous album. From the first song “It is nothing” I recognize their typical heavy sound. In their music ‘Jesus and Mary chain’ meet ‘My Bloody Valentine’ and Garage rock is played in a Shoegaze way. There are heavy guitars, heavy voices and an album that continues in a really unordinary rhythm. The mysteriously slow “Lost Feeling” is followed by the 60’s go-go garage beat “Dead Beat”. The no wave 80’s “The Smile When You Smile” follows the noisy electronica “Ego Death”. ‘A place to bury strangers’ had created an album that the best phrase to describe it is its title “EXPLODING HEAD”.

Birchville Cat Motel is over (?). Campbell Kneale recently pulled the plug on the project and has immediately metamorphosed into Our Love Will Destroy the World. Kneale is a metal fan! But he produces, with this project, electronica noise music, drones and a “heavy metal” ambient harsh fuss. This project of him is quite avant-garde and truly experimental. I will not describe every release separately, but I will say that all these releases are madly interesting and maybe this kind of sound he produces is unique. Fantastic atmosphere, excellent soundscapes, dreamy ambient, harsh noises, huge drones and what else… try to explore this music, you will gain a lot. This is melody behind the noise.

This release is actually a Gizeh 2008 release only for Britain. This year Denovali records and Cargo records try to spread it around the whole world and there are new CD and LP versions of the EP/Album. Her Name Is Calla is one of the darkest British bands at this period of time. Their post-rock is experimental and their atmosphere is darkest than a gloomy midnight sky. Their music is the most alternative version of ‘My Bloody Valentine’ and ‘Nick Cave’. This album needs a lot of rain to be understood. Leeds, Leicester and York unfortunately have a lot of rain and the result is this dark, sleepy, gloomy, sad and woebegone release. There is common ground between HNIC and bands like ‘a place to bury strangers’ and ‘iLiKETRAiNS’. This kind of new age dark rock is sadder than ever before. Their cries are soul-destroying. Don’t close your eyes, it is dangerous, you’ll loose your mind, you‘ll reach the wild nails of depression. Experiments and the use of instruments like Cello, Viola and Violins make it deeper and darker with a deep black mood. Post-rock used to be atmospheric but this new blood of UK experimental post-rock bands, produce a kind of dark and doomy post-rock like no one before. They are an interesting group which tries to get out the underground style they had. They had the tracks but they need your love.

After 5 years of discographic absence, Tortoise produce a new album named ” Beacons of Ancestorship”. Their composition failure in their previous album, made this album very special as they had to prove that their music travel is not ending and they still have a lot to offer. So they gave their best and this is the result:
An album with not even one musical rule but an album full of musical intelligence. This album is funkier than any other, but it is full of all their other musical influences as well. So it’s a combination of funky music with post-punk explosions and post-rock melodies. “Penumbra”, “Gigantes” and “de Chelly” are three examples that prove this novelty. But in my opinion the songs that show their real talent are the heavy post-punk track “Yinxianghechengqi” and the post rock anthem “Charteroak Foundation” that closes the album.
This album demonstrates that Tortoise didn’t loose their musical intelligence and they are still capable to create interesting albums.
