NOFX – Coaster [2009]

NOFX – Coaster
[Fat wreck chords, 2009]
Genre: punk rock, ska punk
Album Review by Goresonic

Twenty five years of existence. Twenty-five years full of punk rock energy. Their political actions and the way they transformed their music to political movement against American wars are memorable. The way they perform their songs with a funny but loud mood is what it really made them special. Their previous failure with “Wolves In Wolves’ Clothing” didn’t disappointed them and this year NOFX, the symbol of the new age punk, came back in business with “Coaster” and show to everyone why they are that famous.
From the first hearing I realize their return to where they belong: the LA – punk and ska-punk. Songs like “We called it America”,“The quitter” “Blasphemy”, “First call”,” Eddie, Bruce and Paul”, ”Suits and ladders” are the examples of their LA punk return and songs like “Creeping out Sara”, “Best god in show”, “The agony of victory” and “I am an alcoholic” are examples of their ska-punk roots.
They start the album with “We called it America” an aggressive start full of speed drums. The political speculation is obvious from the first lines of the song (“That was the America that we thought was number one”). Then the bass is violently used from Fat Mike on “Quitter”, 25 years of experience made him understand that this instrument is probably the most important in punk groups. The bass violation continues in the next song named ”First call”. In both songs NOFX show (especially Mike) the result of their previous alcoholic problems. In the ska-punk song “I’m an alcoholic” we see a self-sarcasm for the negative consequences of their alcoholism. The music that accompanies the lyrics was perfectly chosen and written.
Back to the political – social songs, “Blasphemy” and “Best God show” except of their fantastic guitar riffs and the fucking hardcore drums are also the way that the band view the religious hypocrisy and madness and explain the reasons why they are atheists.
The album surprise is the “creeping out Sara”. The band’s sense of humour for them and for other bands is obvious. “Creeping out Sara”, my favourite song in the album, is Mike’s Personal experience with Sara from Tegan & Sara duo. His voice is the typical NOFX voice that made me their fan back when I was 15.
A song that we have to mention is “my orphan year”. A song that is loud and very rhythmic. Mike’s voice is more upset as he is sharing his sentiments for loosing both his parents when he was alcoholic and how sorry he feels for that. That’s the reason that NOFX in this song gave it all and transformed this song in one of their bests.
The album ends with “One Million Coasters” on a smooth & jazzy vibe.
I really enjoyed their return to the music scene. I hope you will too.

These two Extended Play discs promote experimental doom metal. Both bands are quite influenced from My Dying Bride, and they both bring forward the sound of metal. Sludge compositions, dark atmospheres, noise guitars and slow tones. Alternative glance of doom and heavy riffs. Two EPs that can introduce you to the dusty side of old school doom metal. Both bands use experimental, brutal or scream harsh vocals. Extreme music from two interesting bands. A combination of old fashioned doom metal and alternative drone metal of 00s.

CFCF, Eilen Jewel, the Same Sky [2009]

CFCF 2009CFCF – Panesian nights EP
[Paper Bag Records, 2009]
genre: indie electronic ,electronic pop ,disco

CFCF is Mike Silver, an electronic producer from Montreal, Canada. This ep has an old-fashion disco sound. Some times is a bit chilled out, some others is more ripping. It reminds you the 80’s disco school music. One or two songs of this ep can easy be listened in a house dance party.

[Signature sounds, 2009]
genre: folk, country pop, blues

This is a 60’s era album. Anyone who listens to the album without knowing her, will probably believe that is a 1966 – 1967 production. Blues and country traditional music with Eilen ’s sweet voice. Some songs turned me blue and some others gave me happiness. Finally, it is worth to mention the 3 covers (Sometime blues,The darkest day, I’m gonna dressed black) which were transformed from her performance.

[Vo, 2009]
Genre: indie psychedelic, folk

‘The Same sky’ is actually a fifteen year old boy from Chile named Joseph Simon. He’s singing and playing the guitar as well. His voice has a melancholic, erotic and sweet sound. His guitar playing is warm in a slow rhythm. This is a melancholic album for all the cold winter days that are spent at home. His influences are obvious Beirut and Arcade fire. I think the future is in front of this young talented boy.

Woods – Songs of Shame [2009]

Woods – Songs of Shame
[Shrimper/Woodsist, 2009]
genre: noise pop, lo-fi, pop americana , folk ,psychedelic pop
Album review by Goresonic

‘Songs of Shame’ is the forth full length album of this NYC based band, named Woods. The first time I’ve listened to the album I said that this new Woods album is acceptable. Then I started to listen carefully the album and the acceptable feeling was transformed to a lovable sensation.
Melodic voices with interesting noise guitar solos and loud drums. The big surprise of the album is the forth song named “September with Pete”. It’s a nine minute guitar jam that I really didn’t expect, especially not in the middle of the album. The next song (Down this road) comes next, just to keep the balance in the record. Then the melodic “Born to lose” shares happiness and three songs before the end the melancholic “Rain on” is the perfect song to describe the album’s philosophy.
Songs of shame is not only an album to improve the band, but also gives the example to follow in order to improve the lo-fi scene as well.

The Last Drive – Heavy Liquid [2009]

THE LAST DRIVE – HEAVY LIQUID
[Happy Crasher/Blind Bastard Records, 2009]
genre: garage rock, psychobilly, rock n roll, desert rock
Album Review by Judas

Sometimes artist’s little comments include the whole spirit that a reviewer is trying to describe. The Heavy Liquid album is dedicated to Lux Interior (lead singer and former of THE CRAMPS) and to Mr. Hunter S. Thompson. If you don’t dig those two you’re probably unable to understand what the LAST DRIVE is about.
Formed in the early 80’s in Athens, Greece they were the best English-spoken band in town and they kept the legend of their name until 1995 when they disbanded. Last drive’s music melting pot was a mix of garage, rockabilly, and surf. They took all the elements of 50’s and 60’s music and they made something fresh and unique in the late 80’s with the albums “Underworld Shakedown”, 1986 and “Heatwave”, 1988. Those albums are on top of the 80’s garage/rock’n’roll/punk era. On the next 3 albums, the band changed musical direction. “Blood Nirvana”, 1990, “F#ckhead Entropy”, 1992 and “Subliminal”, 1994, are heavier including heavy rock elements, dessert sound and represent the late 80’s early 90’s Athens decline and the raise of the political and musical underground movement. During their career except all the rock’n’roll and garage stereotypes that they always kept questioning, they sang about city’s decadence, the despair of being alone and the heroin as a part of the process that kills all the rebel souls. With having a hardcore political line and delivering their music in every little corner in Greece, playing anywhere they were invited they created a myth all these years. They played with the Wipers, Jesus and Mary Chain, the Gun Club. They toured in Germany with Dead Moon and they also played some shows in Spain. Finally they seemed to represent everything the Greek music underground was all about.
In 1995 the disbanded and after 12 years, silence was broken with 3 sold out gigs in Athens that were followed with many more in Greece and Europe. Unlike many empty reunions this one was worth. The tense on those gigs was the proof with everybody going completely crazy. Those shows were captured on film and the “Time Is Not Important” release on cd/dvd was just a reminding war-up for this year’s full length “Heavy Liquid” on Drive’s own record label “Happy Crasher”. This album includes everything The Last Drive was and still is about. The sound is similar to the latest releases of the band and all the 80’s generation heroes fly like drunken ghosts while the album is on the instant replay. Beat literature, rock’n’roll attitude, massive hits, great artwork and smart lyrics from a band that doesn’t have to prove their history, instead they take it one step forward with this effort.
LOVERS OF ROCK N ROLL DIG THIS ALBUM IMMEDIATELY

Sunn 0))) – Monoliths & Dimensions [2009]

Sunn 0))) – Monoliths & Dimensions
[Southern Lord, 2009]
genre: drone, dark ambient, metal, experimental, industrial, doom, black metal, lowcore
Album Review by Sovereign
Last year I have been impressed with the experimental live performance Sunn did in Norway (domkirke 2008 ). I think this try they made over there, is presented this year with their new album in a more professional way. A dark, noisy and doomy release, with a black, pagan, mystic atmosphere and Attila on the vocals, spoken words, screams etc etc. Fantastic mood, excellent noises, dreamy (or nightmare) vocals, great drones, huge distortions, shitty amplifiers and a great album at the end as a result. O’malley and Anderson collaborated with composer Eyvind Kang (notable for his work with John Zorn, Marc Ribot, Bill Frisell, etc.) on various acoustic ensembles, in addition to the Helios fueled electric guitars and basses. Key players on the album include Australian guitar genius Oren Ambarchi, enigmatic Hungarian vocalist Attila Csihar (Mayhem, Tormentor, etc.) as I already said and slow music godfather Dylan Carlson (Earth), as well as a brass section: Steve Moore (of Earth), Julian Priester (worked with Sun Ra in the 50s, John Coltrane’s African Brass band, and Herbie Hancock’s Sextant band) and new-music horn player Stuart Dempster. There’s also an upright bass trio, French & English horns, harp & flute duo, piano, reed & strings ensembles, and a Viennese woman’s choir led by Persian vocal savant Jessika Kenney. This work is unbelievable. The album is an hymn to drone and a definition of dark ambient. It is an industrial dull work and an experimental metal try. Prepare your ears, they ‘re gonna bleed.

____________________________________________________
An Italian sound artist – composer send us some months ago 2 records of him and one compilation of his record label named trashfucknet which includes a song of his. After the first hearing, I realized that even the production was a bit dilettante the compositions were of a pure industrial – techno quality. Then, I saw his myspace page and his record label page and I discover that we were talking about a full DIY label that it’s worth to mention.

FabioRosho’s untitled is heavy techno album. His Berlin techno influences are obvious. His music even if it’s too dark and noisy, makes you move into its rhythm. Album that definitely sounds better in a club. It’s the sound that makes you dance and jump. The only weakness is the unprofessional production which is the logical result of a DIY record.

FabioRosho’s tracks is a dark industrial electronic album. This album is darker than the previous one. It’s more mysterious and more “scary”. Even if I liked untitled more than this one as an album, I would say that this one has two unbelievable good songs. The first one is “KReM@ v1.0”, an industrial “bomb” in our ears and the second one is a drum ’n’ bass song named “GRAVE”.

The compilation is a techno experiment of amateur musicians. So this means that the production is not good and a lot of the songs are just pure noise. Although FabioRosho’s song here is a Berlin techno travel. A song full of energy. Other songs that are worth to be mentioned: Dental Work – Live Human Experimentation, RedSK – Nmcxsnji.

Ps.

Balmorhea, Coala Pascal, Heroin and your veins [2009]

Three new (2009) albums. Three post-rock / ambient / experimental releases. Three works quite similar to each other, easy listening rock and shoegaze, neo classical passages and instrumental carpets…

Balmorhea – all is wild, all is silent
[Western Vinyl, 2009]
genre: post-rock, ambient, neo-classical, instrumental, experimental rock

balAn excellent ethereal and rhythm release from an Austin based band. They mix all kinds of strings like violin, cello, guitar, banjo, double bass, with piano and more, and they create a collage of sounds. This band is an emotional orchestra. Talented people, create fantastic music. The most of the times instrumental albums is not so commercial, and it is not so attractive to the ears, but these guys create great soundscapes and their work can be more attractive than others. They can intertwine your mind, your soul and your feelings. Their music is quite cinematic and theatrical.

Coala Pascal – lifting cranes have already heard that
[2009]
genre: experimental rock, ambient, post-rock, electronica, lo-fi

foldcoaerThis band has no distributor. They are not in a label, but I think they should be. Electronic post-rock music, ambient sounds and slow motion vibes. Easy listening relaxing music and dreamy compositions. Half an hour of decently and trimly soundscapes. I think their music is quite original, pioneer and innovator. Check them out if you like experimental rock, ambient electronica and lo-fi. This is really modern post-rock by a band from Ukraine. Great job, they deserve some congratulations.

Heroin and your Veins – Nausea
[Verdura,2009]
genre: instrumental, dark, alternative rock, ambient, indie rock, post-rock, experimental, post punk

naus Another ambient trip album. They remind me bohren and dur club of gore. They are similar with the above, but they have a more alternative, indie and dark rock side. Their guitars are murkier. They are so experimental, and they combine darkwave music and post-punk feelings with ambient and emotional sounds. I vote for this album, and it can be a fellow traveler for every night. Sometimes the sound of this album sounds really progressive and other times scary. Dark music and slow tunes. Dusty noises and soundtrack recordings.

And so I Watch you from Afar – and so i watch you from afar
[Smalltown America, 2009]
genre: experimental rock, instrumental, post-rock, noise-rock, avant-prog, math rock
Album Review by Sovereign

Incredible experimental rock music with a punk, post rock and progressive attitude. This album is really interesting and it is the debut full length release from this band. A virtuoso instrument sound and an avant prog sound collage. Accelerated rock speed, noisy percussions and post-hardcore guitars. There is a metal heart deep inside their minds and make their rock more attractive to modern metal fans. A noise rock revolution under the blanket of post-metal and sludge. Sometimes their rock is old school orientated, other times is more modern than anyone else’s tries. This is a great inspired album and a fantastic work from the production. A collage of modern ideas and post-rock future glances. A technical and math rock mosaic. I found their music amazing. High-toned sounds and a noise continuous deformation. Tickling music from happy people. Dance in their tones and feel the hit of the summer… find it among these 11 tracks. After several instrumental post-rock releases, my ears get confused and tired, but this band is quite ahead the others.

Austere – To Lay Like Old Ashes
[Eisenwald, 2009]
genre: Depressive Black Metal
Album Review by Edenbeast

Φωνητικά ξεθαμμένα από In the woods στα πρώτα τους βήματα.

Antique Brothers – Season’s Feast [2009]

Antique Brothers – Season’s Feast
[Not Not Fun, 2009]
genre: psych, avant garde, experimental, improv.
Album Review by [thezeroeffect]

Antique Brothers are Connecticut-bred brothers Cy and Ged Gengras who instead of the ordinary sibling squabbling have focused on producing music.
And they have done so for enough time to reach a point of what feels like great artistic communication. You can find their releases on various labels since 2006 but i think this year’s Season’s Feast on Not Not Fun would be a great place for you to get acquainted with the brother’s music.
Season’s Feast is a solid piece of psych music constantly shifting in mood, form & style. Employing a variety of acoustic sounds, heavy guitars that might remind you of doom/drone metal bands like Sunn O))) or The Goslings, even some Middle Eastern flavour they are able to keep a sense of chaos to it all that is just brilliant.
Their music craft is at its best in the last track of this album, Hourglass Of The Underworld where all these elements blend perfectly to form an ideal closing song.

Flower Corsano Duo – The four aims
[Vhf, 2009]
genre: noise, experimental, free jazz, psychedelic
Album review by goresonic

flowercorsanoMick Flower is an unbelievable good player of this special Japan banjo named as “Shaahi Baaja”. Chris Corsano is probably the best drummer in the world. Their collaboration started in 2007 with “The Radiant Mirror” which was a very special psychedelic noisy album.
This year they continue their collaboration with the upcoming “The four aims” album. Corsano’s drums performance is amazing. His rhythms and percussions, sound like bombs in our ears. No other drummer can do what Corsano does with his drums. On the other side Flower is more psychedelic and more oriental than their previous collaboration.
The result is an aggressive noisy drum session with Indian and psychedelic influences. A combination of heavy noisy “lighting bolt sounds” with Flower’s ex groups (Vibracathedral Orchestra) sounds. An experiment that succeeded again and we hope that will continue in the future.

A Plea for Purging – Depravity
[Facedown, 2009]
genre: metalcore, tech metal, hardcore, heavy metal, metal, death metal
Album Review by Sovereign

apleaforpurgingdepravityThe band is now mature. Their metal is technical, raw and hard. This is heavy metal with thrash attitude and brutal vocals. This is a fresh hardcore, a more metalcore than anything else, but on the other hand, it is the most classical metal hardcore, the most heavy and power metal influenced release of the genre. This is pure and strong. Sometimes the album sounds bland but in any way, every single track is unique and interesting. This Christian metal band offers us positive tracks and hardcore music. This album could move the band forward. This is the abstract album of them. They can be better, but with this release they can get out of the mass, out of the trash. Excellent blast beat hardcore compositions. Music made for hardcore people. This is hardcore metal and nothing else. Recommended to fans of Killswitch Engage, Between the Buried and Me, the Black Dahlia Murder, Architects, Burnt by the Sun, Burst and As I Lay Dying. If you give time to this record you will realize how excellent it is. Maybe in some months or some years from now, it will be the flagship of the metal hardcore armada.

God Is An Astronaut Live in Athens, 2009

God Is An Astronaut Live @ Gagarin205, Athens, 08/05/09
Live Cast by Sovereign

Subheim – Approach 2008

Subheim – Approach
[Tympanik Audio, 2009]
genre: ambient, idm, electronica, experimental
Album Review by Sovereign

subheim Subheim is the deeply personal project of electronic music composer and visual artist Kostas K., a downtempo, experimental venture fusing IDM elements with rich ambiance and female vocals by Katja. This release gives us excellent sounds. Ambient music mixed with melodic dance electronic vibes. Great music and easy listening soundscapes. Clever compositions and attractive or maybe ticklish beats. The vocals trip you away… this is the most atmospheric electronic album of the last years. Excellent job from the artist. An orchestra of vibes, ambiences and dreams. a melodic safe dream, a new dimension of ambient, a new kind of easy listening electronica.

Fiesta Animal, Muso Fantasma / [More Mars] 2009

Fiesta Animal – La Formula Secreta de la Coca-Cola
[More Mars, 2009]
genre: lo-fi, diy, sound-collage, experimental, noise
Album Review by |kollaps|

***More Mars is a newly founded unpretentious greek label, which nevertheless has offered some superb releases like Fervent’s miniature electronics in “Conjestion”, Inverz’s take on melancholic soundscapes in “Variations on Hold” (bringing to mind Tim Hecker or the artists of the Touch label) and the fantastic compilation entitled “Deconstructive Music”, which gathers individual tracks by noise and experimental music icons such as Mattin, Zeitkratzer, Carlos Giffoni and Ilios.***

fiesta-animalThe launch of the new Anarthria cdr series finds the More Mars team digging deeper into the fields of obscure sounds. The first instalment finely titled “La Formula Secreta de la Coca-Cola” is the effort of Fiesta Animal, a collective of artists from Uruguay who use percussion, tapes and murky noisy sounds to create ‘genuine’ lo-fi loops and rhythmic patterns. The record contains some nice examples of how the cassette lo-fi underground of the previous decades is still thriving: repeated percussive elements, noisy clamor and mumbled vocals allocated between some ‘proper’ tracks and a few other skits. I’d say that “La Formula…” bears some resemblance to the new weirdo-diy-no wave stuff that’s currently coming out of the US with groups like Wavves, Lucky Dragons et al., although some tracks (especially those containing some metallic percussion) took me almost 30 years back, to some Neubauten songs, circa Kollaps (Jet’m etc.). Pure, spontaneous fun…

Muso Fantasma – Se Puede Bailar Con Los Demonios Pero Siempre En Actituo De Fiesta
[More Mars, 2009]
genre: lo-fi, industrial, noise, experimental, spoken word, sound-collage
Album Review by |kollaps|

muso-fantasmaThe second release in the Anarthria series comes from Spain: Muso Fantasma is a duo who managed to create a really unclassifiable record. “Se Puede Bailar Con Los Demonios Pero Siempre En Actituo De Fiesta” (yeah, that’s quite a long title…) is a mixture of sound collages, with elements ranging from dark haunting passages (Ciudad Juarez), cheapo keyboard tangos (Tango Maldito), to spoken word blended with noisy backgrounds (like Mente Terrenal, reminding the soundtracks of some early 80s Richard Kern short films, by Foetus, Thurston Moore, etc.), and Ghost Box-like retro sounds. Well, I wish I could understand the spanish texts; the mysterious and decadent atmosphere and the theatrical, dramatic ambience created by the sounds is really promising… Although it would take more than one or two listens to get into it, it surely grasps your attention.

Funeral Mist – Maranatha 2009

Funeral Mist – Maranatha
[Norma Evangelium Diaboli,2009]
genre:black metal
Album Review by Edenbeast

Sonic youth – The Eternal 2009

Sonic youth – The Eternal
[Matador records, 2009]
genre: noise rock, experimental rock, post-punk, no wave
Album review by goresonic
ssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssΠως να ξεκινήσεις να γράφεις για μία τέτοια μπάντα; Μία μπάντα που συνέβαλέ όσο λίγες στην εξέλιξη της μουσικής; Μία μπάντα που κοντεύει να κλείσει 30 χρόνια συνεχόμενης παρουσίας χωρίς να έχει αλλάξει ούτε ένα μέλος του βασικού του line-up (μόνο 2 γνωστές προσθήκες έχουν γίνει και μία αλλαγή στα πρώιμα χρόνια της) και συνεχίζει όχι για να βγάλει τα συντάξιμα της αλλά γιατί πραγματικά μπορεί και θέλει να συνεχίσει να προσφέρει στην «κοινωνία της μουσικής»; Μία μπάντα που έχει από τις καλύτερες live σκηνικές παρουσίες; Μία μπάντα που γαμάει και δέρνει γενικώς;
• “Leaky Lifeboat (For Gregory Corso)”: Κομμάτι γραμμένο και αφιερωμένο στον Gregory Corso ποιητή που πέθανε το 2001.
• “What We Know”: Εισαγωγή με τον Steve να δίνει το ρυθμό στην φασαρία του Lee και η έκπληξη ακολουθεί με το duo Kim-Lee που δεν το έχουμε ξανακούσει ποτέ.
• “Thunderclap For Bobby Pyn”: Αφιερωμένο στον Bobby Pyn των Germs που αυτοκτόνησε.

Mastodon – Crack The Skye 2009

Mastodon – Crack The Skye
[Reprise Records, 2009]
genre: progressive, sludge metal. math rock, tech metal
Album review by Edenbeast
crack-the-skye-cover

KTL – IV 2009

KTL – IV
[Mego,2009]
genre :drone, noise, experimental, dark ambient, ambient, abstract, industrial
Album Review by Sovereign

KTL is a duo made up of Stephen O’Malley (Sunn O))), Khanate) and Editions Mego head Peter Rehberg (Pita). In the compositions of IV, O’Malley’s doom riffs are more out front and centre and Rehberg’s tense electro-mind make the atmosphere of IV chillingly bleak.

This album recorded and mixed at Studio GOK Sound, Tokyo, September 2008. Mastered at Piethopraxis, Köln, October 2008. Sometimes the vibes are a bit monotonous, but in general are quite interesting. The release is relaxing and calm, and there is a dark and something industrial around the atmosphere. An ambient noise that doesn’t bother you at all. Excellent division of sound and experiments.

God Dethroned – Passiondale 2009

God Dethroned – Passiondale
[Metal Blade,2009]
genre: death metal, black metal, metal, hardcore, melodic death
Album Review by Sovereign

Raw death metal or a more blackened style of death metal?
A classic heavy metal release with blast beats, death brutal vocals (there are some clean heavy vocals also) and high speeds. No survivors at all. A cruel death and an unstoppable massacre. A disaster, an old school metal release. An obsolete of death. A harsh melody. A cataclysm, a deluge.
This release is a classic destruction of ears. A heavy stone. Recommended only to old school death metal fans… in some circumstances it can be listened by black metal fans and hardcore lovers.

Clues – clues
[Constellation,2009]
genre : indie pop, indie rock, experimental, art rock, psychedelic, electronica, post-rock
Album Review by Sovereign

This is a happy indie album that can bright your face and fulfilled you with smiles and beams. A neo pop release with an orchestral attitude. The Canadian post music style is diffused around the sounds of the album. Multiple drummers, electronica, tickling guitars and experimental rock glances. The atmosphere is like ‘do make say think’ releases, the guitars are quite happier, the ambiences are huge and the experimental desire is intelligent. A great album by some great musicians. This is quality music and your ears can feel quite well. Just try if you like alternative music, try it if you like post modern music, try it if you like folk and cabaret music, and give it a chance if you are into POP music… sweet and atmospheric pop. Belle & Sebastian, of Montreal, Islands, Arcade fire and the Unicorns.
