The End Of The Ocean – Calm Seas Don’t Make Sailors [2009]

The End Of The Ocean – Calm Seas Don’t Make Sailors
[demo, 2009]
genre: post-rock, ambient, instrumental
EP Review by Sovereign

We are trying to support this band because I realize that their post-rock is really easy listening and truly well constructed.
Brian asks to post this one and this is a pleasure for this blog. This release is their first release, as a demo, and you can download it for free.
“The end of the ocean” create sweat rock in an instrumental and an ambient point of view. Four tracks of heavy and tied experimental and modern rock under the illusion of an ambient and atmospheric background. A hallucinatory music from a promising band.

Nuggies – The Sound of Explosions From The Northeast [2009]

Nuggies – The Sound of Explosions From The Northeast
[Gorilla Ointment,2009]
genre: abstract, electronica, experimental, ambient, IDM, glitch, noise-rock
EP Review by Sovereign

Nuggies a have a released a new ep entitled The Sound of Explosions from the Northeast . The EP is being released by Gorilla Ointment and is also being distributed for free via the internet.
This is an intelligent and quite experimental electronica band with a noise rock profile. This record is strongly experimental and the tracks are totally weird. Their music is strange and the compositions are an extreme version of melodic music.
Check out also the album of them “Native American President”. Their music is the definition of abstract.

Giardini di Miro – Il Fuoco[2009]

GIARDINI DI MIRO – IL FUOCO
[Unhip records, 2009]
genre: post rock, slowcore, ambient
Album review by Goresonic

“Il fuoco” (the fire) was a silent movie directed by Giovanni Pastrone in 1915.
The municipal cultural club of Regio Emilia, the province of Italy where ‘Giardini’ are coming from, proposed them to make the soundtrack for this movie in a live performance in the town. Giardini accepted this challenge and “il fuoco” was firstly presented live in January 14th in the city of Reggio Emilia. (here is the link for the live show in Athens 06/02/09)The band was performing their music live while the movie was screened in the background. The success of this performance made them start a tour through Italy to perform “il fuoco”. Then they decided to get into a studio and make “il fuoco” their 4th official album. The album has three parts as many as the film has too: “La favilla”, “La vampa” and “La cenere”. “La favilla” sounds like the introduction to the movie. It’s a mix of ambient and slow – sensitive post rock, especially the second song (La favilla 2) that sounds like the introduction in the story. As the story goes on, the music gets more heavy till the last song “La favilla 7” where the heavy drums show the panic and fear before the catharsis of the last minute of the song. “La vampa” is the most tensed and more interesting part of the album. It starts slowly, in the same rhythm that “la favilla” left us. Then after 3-4 minutes becomes noisier till we arrive to the most interesting song of the album “La Vampa 2”. I suppose that the most interesting and most seditious part of the movie is in this part. “La cenere” is like the end of a drama. It’s the most ambient and slow part. The drama’s prominence has past and we are in the part where the characters are ready to say goodbye to the spectators. Giardini di Miro’s new album is an album that cannot be judged from someone that hasn’t seen the movie. (link for Giardini’s last album: Giardini Di Miro – Dividing Opinions (Homesleep,2007) ) That’s why I will not do it as well. I will only express my admiration to their composures.

Nadja – Under the Jaguar Sun [2009]

Nadja – Under the Jaguar Sun
[Beta-lactam Ring, 2009]
genre: noise, doom, metal, drone, experimental metal, alternative metal, ambient
Album Review by Sovereign

I think this is the sixth time I wrote for this band only this year (2009). And this is the 8th or the 9th release of them for 2009. What else to say, collaborations, compilations, live, old covers, full length albums, 12”inch, EP, remixes and singles. Here are all the other 2009 nadja posts of this blog: http://noiz.wordpress.com/2009/09/21/nadja-belles-betes-2009/ plus the last one with black boned angel http://noiz.wordpress.com/2009/09/29/nadja-black-boned-angel-nadja-black-boned-angel-2009/ . This album is actually the official 2009 full length release of Baker. All the previous ones are covers, or compilations or live releases, so I think we have to pay attention to this one. This is a double disc release. Darkness and wind… There are cello, violin, harmonium, sitar and piano inside the compositions in this release. This is the greatest of all. This is the modern noise metal. Drone till death. Satanic vibes, fantastic terror atmosphere and voices around my brain. Their music is screaming in my head. I think this is one of the best ever nadja releases. This is progressive music. Oh my Lord, this is a masterpiece. I think this is the best ever ambient – drone metal release. I just love it from the first hearing. Excellent. A disc full of metal and drone doom strings and the second one trully experimental and ethereal ambient.

Nadja & Black Boned Angel – nadja & black boned angel [2009]

Nadja & Black Boned Angel – nadja & black boned angel
[20BuckSpin, 2009]
genre: drone, noise, experimental, ambient, doom
Album Review by Sovereign

20 Buck Spin’s press release statement said : “The idea for a collaboration between Canada’s prolific neo-doom duo Nadja (check here other Nadja releases) and New Zealand’s pitch black droners Black Boned Angel (check here Verdun 2009 release) was first hatched in conversations between 20 Buck Spin and Nadja’s Aidan Baker around the time Nadja released their Truth Becomes Death EP on Alien8 Recordings in 2006. 20 Buck Spin ran the idea by Campbell Kneale of Black Boned Angel, who at that point was unfamiliar with Nadja. After hearing their material, the complimentary potential was realized, and the groups began their cross-continental collaboration sending music back and forth digitally”, and this is the second attempt of this collaboration after the 2008 release “Christ Send Light”, which was a Jesu like drone doom tracks with experimental vocals. This year’s self tilted collaboration is a bit weirder and I think not that good as the previous one. I think this attempt is a bit more bloated and unfocused. There is a feeling of repeat and the music sound static, unmusical and unvocal. These 2 tracks are a music trip between two continents. I said that because the two bands did not play together and the whole album was constructed by passing sound files back and forth between Canada and New Zealand. Unfortunately this is the problem and the result doesn’t warm me up. As for the sound, it is a fully ambient noise journey, a slow motion core something. It is heavy and massive and sometimes is quite experimental. But I think there are several better releases from both of them this year.

Nadja – belles betes [2009]

Nadja – belles betes
[Beta-lactam Ring, 2009]
genre: drone, doom, ambient, noise
Album Review by Sovereign

This release includes a remaking/reworking of some of Aidan Baker’s solo works. Actually is a kind of cover’s in older songs of him. The release is limited in 500 copies. I think Nadja is the only band that can cover their songs… it is clever and quite interesting. The atmosphere of all the remakes is under a strong and heavy drone sound. Recommended only to fans. Great atmospheric drone doom tracks, under a dark and doom ambient soundscape. I do not have more to say, it is one of the 8 2009 releases of the band:
1. Nadja / Black Boned Angel Full-length, 2009
2. A storm of Light/Nadja – Primitive North Split album, 2009

Review by Sovereign

Birchville Cat Motel is over (?). Campbell Kneale recently pulled the plug on the project and has immediately metamorphosed into Our Love Will Destroy the World. Kneale is a metal fan! But he produces, with this project, electronica noise music, drones and a “heavy metal” ambient harsh fuss. This project of him is quite avant-garde and truly experimental. I will not describe every release separately, but I will say that all these releases are madly interesting and maybe this kind of sound he produces is unique. Fantastic atmosphere, excellent soundscapes, dreamy ambient, harsh noises, huge drones and what else… try to explore this music, you will gain a lot. This is melody behind the noise.

A sunny day in Glasgow – Ashes Grammar [2009]

A sunny day in Glasgow – Ashes Grammar
[Mis Ojos, 2009]
genre: electronica, ambient, dream pop, pop, experimental, noise, indie pop, indie rock
Album Review by Sovereign

Just like 2 years ago “A sunny day in Glasgow” produces an experimental kind of pop music. As I said at that time they produce “Dreamed pop, enchanting ambient, experimental shoegaze, an alternative noise electronic music. Each one track is so much different from all the others”. I think they still confuse me, they mix pop, rock and techno, they produce something different, but something really atmospheric and groovy or pleasing. This album is the sun in a mood day, and it is a fully summer time disk! Ben Daniels and his twin sisters blend a melodic sound collage with ethereal vocals and experimental glances. The album is promotes happy feelings and the sound is truly dreamy. Fantastic waves and a little boat floating down the seaside… More than one hour of music that push you to close your eyes and dream… don’t miss this album, it is sweet and excellent.

Nadja – clinging to the edge of the sky [2009]

Nadja – clinging to the edge of the sky (12 inch vinyl – EP)
[Vendetta, 2009]
genre: minimal, drone, experimental, ambient, slowcore
EP Review by Sovereign

This 12inch vinyl recorded after Nadja moved to Germany. The record which was recorded in Berlin, with artwork done by a Swedish living in Berlin ( www.hlg.se ) , on two Berlin based labels ( adagio830 & vednetta ) is in front of us. ‘Clinging to the Edge of the Sky’ is not the usual Nadja record.
There is a minimal sound structure and it is a beat slower down than ever before. It is experimental but it is not as noisy and distorted as their previous releases. It is about 16 minutes and only one track, a sad, slow and minimal track that trips you far away. It is quite interesting and for sure the most ambient Nadja try. This is the nadja ballad approach.

Sunlight Ascending – All the Memories, All at Once [2009]

Sunlight Ascending – All the Memories, All at Once
(futurerecordings, 2009)
genre: post-rock, shoegaze, instrumental, ambient
Album Review by Sovereign

Sunlight Ascending is a new band, formed in 2007 by some kids (aged from 15 to 21) in USA. Their music is fully inspired by Radiohead, Explosions in the Sky, Mogwai, God is an Astronaut and GY!BE. Is a great try and I am thinking that they deserve a lot of attention from fans of classic post-rock and modern shoegaze. They don’t miss anything from the bands that influence them and they have the potential to be better from them. This band could be the future of the saturated genre of post-rock. A fully atmospheric modern rock and a young and fresh music idea! Beautiful melodies and idyllic compositions, a travel in a dream and rigmarole from a sweet newborn baby. The disk is very sweet and it can raise your sentiments and your thoughts, something that all post rock groups who deserve to write music, can do and should do.

Mokira – Persona [2009]

Mokira – Persona
[Type, 2009]
genre: drone, experimental, noise, ambient
Album Review by Sovereign

I loved this project years ago with the album “Hateless”. Andreas make a brilliant ambient music fulfilled with influences and sounds that travel from noise till experimental, abstract and drone atmospheres and soundscapes. Back again to Type records after the album “Album” back in 2003. His music is brilliant. This ambient and industrial noise he produce is fantastic. I can say that this artist and this work can be listened for severel type of music fans. It can be easy listening and fully atmospheric in every single mind and ear. This is note an electronica noise and that’s all, this is drone, this is rock, this is dark, this is metal, this is ethereal. I can say that the maturity of this record is really high. Please check this out and have a fantastic taste of drone and ambient music. It can be classic. Excellent!!

White Static Demon – decayed
[Avalanche, 2009] Digital-only debut release from this project
genre: noise, drone, experimental, ambient
Album Review by Sovereign

Noisy soundscapes that can thrill your brain. “White Static Demon is a new Justin K Broadrick project for which he has been working on recordings for over one year. Again, like Council Estate Electronics, White Static Demon was inspired by Justin collecting and compiling material from Final cassette releases on his Post Mortem Rekordings label circa 1984-87”( http://justinkbroadrick.blogspot.com/). An album full of extreme noises, drones and experimental electronics. An abstract electro drone distortion. This is extreme and this is experimental. It is a new release which has been inspired by old material. I really enjoy it because it is a noisy ambient trip. Dreamy and gloomy vacations offered to my brain. Jump up and then dive into an extreme and rattle or hooting pool.

Final – Reading All The Right Signals Wrong [2009]

Final – Reading All The Right Signals Wrong
[No Quarter, 2009]
genre: ambient, noise, experimental, electronica, drone
Album Review by Sovereign

“Justin Broadrick has always made music which could one day serve as a soundtrack to the end of the world, should we ever need one. Whether with Godflesh or Jesu [click here for other noiz post about: Jesu/envy, Jesu2007, Jesu2007Conqueror, Jesu EP, JKB & Jarboe– themes of urban decay, corporate greed and post-modern malaise often set the bleak tone. Final, his longest running project, is no different. Formed in 1982, it has often run parallel to his more recognizable work and served as an undefinable and more experimental outlet.”-ThrillJockey.com.
Justin produces the entire album with an Apple Mac laptop and offers ethereal noises, ambiences and drones to us. Experimental electronica music from a continuous guy who is assuming bands with different attitudes and music backgrounds. Metal, industrial, shoegaze, post-rock, grind, dub and drones are some of his inspirations. This guy never stops, I really respect him and I believe he already offered me some of my favourite albums and I m looking forward to listen to the new project with Aaron Turner “Greymachine”. Final’s new release is an experimental silence, a lowcore, full of soundscapes and relaxing sounds, some drones from the background and experimentalisms from the Mac. Interesting music, lounge atmosphere, distorted silences and progressive noises. Nice album only in a vinyl format (pending a CD release).

Amia Venera Landscape , Bird from the Abyss (EPs) [2009]

Amia Venera Landscape – Ep
[2009]
genre: post-metal, sludge, post-hardcore, hardcore, experimental, metal, tech metal
EP Review by Sovereign

A sludgy post-hardcore from an Italian band. Brutal vocals rotate with clean and give to the atmosphere an alternative color.
Technical play of instruments, acceleration and high speed guitars. This EP is a great piece of the work about what this band can do.
Three well enough tracks with a heavy attitude, a hardcore sound and a technical approach. This is the first ever work of this band, but out of the blue is really well structured, great from the composition point of view and very good as a sound. No more to say, give it a try and enjoy their inspiration. Modern metal with alternative strokes of the brush.

Bird from the Abyss – I EP
[CD-r,2009]
genre: experimental, psychedelic, folk, experimental rock, art rock, prog, ambient, drone.
EP Review by Sovereign

This EP is a kind of folk doom, it is not exactly a metal release, it is more an experimental rock something than a heavy sound music, it is instrumental music with strange instruments and a folklore attitude.
There is an ethnic and a world music atmosphere.
This release is psychedelic and progressive.
A hot air from Africa, sounds from ancient years, flutes and noise, drones and lutes.
The Finnish band mix ambient and drone sounds with instrumental folkish rock and stoner-a-like fuzzy music.
Really enjoyable first attempt from a new band.
They deserve a lot.

Xela – The Illuminated [2009]

Xela – The Illuminated
[Dekorder, 2009]
genre: noise, ambient, drone, experimental, dark ambient, abstract, black
Album Review by Sovereign

This is a Digitalis Limited 2008 release, but back then, it was in an audio cassette version and in a limited edition. This year it comes out in a vinyl release from Dekorder. Two ambient tracks, full of experimentalisms and noises. 40 minutes of trips and dark memories. Track No1 ‘Black Scripture’ is very atmospheric and really experimental, it is a great composition from the band and I think is my favorite. Dark and gloomy, noisy and a bit dreamy. This track is the ambient, chilly part of the vinyl. Track No 2 ‘Gilted Rose’ it isn’t so atmospheric like the previous one, but is more mysterious and really black and scary. There’s a distant black metal style evil vocal that appears to possess your mind. It is recommended to fans of drone, ambient, noise and maybe black metal. It is the dark and black metal part of the vinyl and it can contradict to great dark ambient and atmospheric black metal bands. Great try from the band. Check out the previous releases of them.

The field – Yesterday and Today [2009]

The field – Yesterday and Today
[Anti / Kompakt, 2009]
genre: techno, dance, ambient, electronica
album review by goresonic

I strongly believe that there are some records that you must listen to at the right time under the right conditions in order to like them. That’s exactly what happened to me with field’s new album “Yesterday and today”. As being influenced from their magnificent debut album “From here we go sublime”, the first two-three times I listen to it was a disappointment to me. Then, one summer evening I started to listen to and in the same time I was scanning the sun from my balcony. The music got into me and I felt the summer mood of the album. I imagined sunset in a beach, summer parties and chill-out on a deck-chair near the sea. This album is dedicated to all of us that our business duties don’t allow us to enjoy the summer atmosphere all the months that it lasts.

Vinterriket – horizontmelancholie [2009]

Vinterriket – horizontmelancholie
[Steinklang, Heimatfolk, 2009]
genre: dark ambient, black, dark, experimental rock, ambient
Album Review by Sovereign

A dark and cloudy release, a relaxing sound, an ambient music picture, all these together can result this album. The use of German language in the lyrics makes it darker to me and gives to it a folk and traditional dimension. Christoph Ziegler who is the guy behind this project, proves that his inspiration is abyssal or something like bottomless. Last year’s album of him “Zeit-Los:Laut-Los” bewitched me, and I think this release is again in high levels and it can be one of the best slow and dark ambient releases of the year. Beautiful silence vibes, electronic tones and some acoustic strings spreading around and makes it more experimental but for sure more easy to listen it. Ethereal sounds and dark chorus… so be careful, if you close your eyes… you can leave your mind, you can dive in a dark and cloudy river and go down with a wooden boat (I think it will be released in a limited black wooden package)… discover the sound of Vinterriket. Dark as hell.

Pandora’s Black Book – Black Brothel [2009]

Pandora’s Black Book – Black Brothel
[Tympanik Audio, 2009]
genre: electronica, idm, drum n bass, ambient, noise, experimental
Album Review by Sovereign

Idyllic music, sometimes with beats and drums others just like a pure melody, an ambient soundscape. Pandora’s Black Book is a project of Lucidstatic, actually is the Alaskan composer James Church. This is a well done album, nice production and an intelligent kind of ambient sounds. A really complicated release flies from dance vibes to experimental passages, and goes through ambient seas to noise cloudy skies. This isn’t a pure ambient album, because there are, as I said, a lot of different sound lines and music origins. I think it is a well composed album and is really interesting and sweet to listen to it in summer days. Electronic experimentalisms from a well established new label with a lot of interesting releases. Quite atmospheric and sometimes high level ambient music can fly you away. In here there is a dream that can be ideal and really beautiful as never before. Enjoy.

These two Extended Play discs promote experimental doom metal. Both bands are quite influenced from My Dying Bride, and they both bring forward the sound of metal. Sludge compositions, dark atmospheres, noise guitars and slow tones. Alternative glance of doom and heavy riffs. Two EPs that can introduce you to the dusty side of old school doom metal. Both bands use experimental, brutal or scream harsh vocals. Extreme music from two interesting bands. A combination of old fashioned doom metal and alternative drone metal of 00s.

Balmorhea, Coala Pascal, Heroin and your veins [2009]

Three new (2009) albums. Three post-rock / ambient / experimental releases. Three works quite similar to each other, easy listening rock and shoegaze, neo classical passages and instrumental carpets…
Albums Review by Sovereign
**********************

Balmorhea – all is wild, all is silent
[Western Vinyl, 2009]
genre: post-rock, ambient, neo-classical, instrumental, experimental rock

balAn excellent ethereal and rhythm release from an Austin based band. They mix all kinds of strings like violin, cello, guitar, banjo, double bass, with piano and more, and they create a collage of sounds. This band is an emotional orchestra. Talented people, create fantastic music. The most of the times instrumental albums is not so commercial, and it is not so attractive to the ears, but these guys create great soundscapes and their work can be more attractive than others. They can intertwine your mind, your soul and your feelings. Their music is quite cinematic and theatrical.

Coala Pascal – lifting cranes have already heard that
[2009]
genre: experimental rock, ambient, post-rock, electronica, lo-fi

foldcoaerThis band has no distributor. They are not in a label, but I think they should be. Electronic post-rock music, ambient sounds and slow motion vibes. Easy listening relaxing music and dreamy compositions. Half an hour of decently and trimly soundscapes. I think their music is quite original, pioneer and innovator. Check them out if you like experimental rock, ambient electronica and lo-fi. This is really modern post-rock by a band from Ukraine. Great job, they deserve some congratulations.

Heroin and your Veins – Nausea
[Verdura,2009]
genre: instrumental, dark, alternative rock, ambient, indie rock, post-rock, experimental, post punk

naus Another ambient trip album. They remind me bohren and dur club of gore. They are similar with the above, but they have a more alternative, indie and dark rock side. Their guitars are murkier. They are so experimental, and they combine darkwave music and post-punk feelings with ambient and emotional sounds. I vote for this album, and it can be a fellow traveler for every night. Sometimes the sound of this album sounds really progressive and other times scary. Dark music and slow tunes. Dusty noises and soundtrack recordings.

Subheim – Approach
[Tympanik Audio, 2009]
genre: ambient, idm, electronica, experimental
Album Review by Sovereign

subheim Subheim is the deeply personal project of electronic music composer and visual artist Kostas K., a downtempo, experimental venture fusing IDM elements with rich ambiance and female vocals by Katja. This release gives us excellent sounds. Ambient music mixed with melodic dance electronic vibes. Great music and easy listening soundscapes. Clever compositions and attractive or maybe ticklish beats. The vocals trip you away… this is the most atmospheric electronic album of the last years. Excellent job from the artist. An orchestra of vibes, ambiences and dreams. a melodic safe dream, a new dimension of ambient, a new kind of easy listening electronica.

KTL – IV 2009

KTL – IV
[Mego,2009]
genre :drone, noise, experimental, dark ambient, ambient, abstract, industrial
Album Review by Sovereign

KTL is a duo made up of Stephen O’Malley (Sunn O))), Khanate) and Editions Mego head Peter Rehberg (Pita). In the compositions of IV, O’Malley’s doom riffs are more out front and centre and Rehberg’s tense electro-mind make the atmosphere of IV chillingly bleak.

This album recorded and mixed at Studio GOK Sound, Tokyo, September 2008. Mastered at Piethopraxis, Köln, October 2008. Sometimes the vibes are a bit monotonous, but in general are quite interesting. The release is relaxing and calm, and there is a dark and something industrial around the atmosphere. An ambient noise that doesn’t bother you at all. Excellent division of sound and experiments.

Noisescapes, sludgy riffs and tribal drums… Screams, roars and howls. Vocalist Alan Dubin of Khanate and drummer Jamie Sykes of Burning Witch have teamed up with shrewd DIY instrumentalist Carter Thornton and sound techs Jun Mizumachi and Brian Beatrice to create the newest signpost in extreme music. This is a very interesting noise and experimental metal release. This album is for avant-metalers and noise freaks. This Face is an annoying outstanding sound trial. This Face is for wicked people, it is for dusky minds. A great noise and industrial experience. Great experiment. Great job.

genre: drone, doom, noise, ambient, experimental, sludge, black
Album Review by Sovereign
Photobucket
This album released by a lot of labels for different regions and countries, some of them are : Obskure Sombre Records(Canada), PsycheDOOMelic(Austria), tUMULt (USA), At War With False Noise(UK), Skyr Records, Bande Noire Rds (France), Odio Sonoro(Spain)… Anyway, the album consisted of 2 tracks. The overall playing time is around 45 minutes. The sound is an unstoppable drone and distortion noise from guitars, slow and rythmless doom drums. Some experimental harsh and brutal vocals spreading around the shitty and dark atmosphere. This is a great noisy drone doom release, quite experimental, really slow and a bit harsh and sludgy. It can be the fellow track of some experimental doom black metal tracks Electric Wizard used to play.

Gareth Hardwick – Aversions 2009

Gareth Hardwick – Aversions
[Low Point, 2009]
genre: ambient, sleep, drone, minimal
Album Review by Sovereign
Photobucket

Nottingham-based musician Gareth Hardwick creates music that is at once rich and quite minimal, stiff and sinuous. By distorting the natural notes of his guitar with effects and loops he can garble and reshuffle the sounds created by his instruments until you’re confused of what you’re listening – an organ, a voice, or no recognisable instrument. Hardwick handed over his back catalogue to several artists considered close friends and colleagues for them to reinterpret, remix or supplement the original material however they wished. So this is the new Hardwick album, ‘Aversions’. Actually this is a compilation of Hardwick tracks remixed by many interesting artists as you can see in the track list below.

I think this is the 8th release of the one man band named Xasthur. He said is a solo project that will never play live, but I remember him live with Sunn 0))), or not? Again an excellent atmospheric blasphemy black metal, full of ambiences and experimental parts. An avant garde depressive music. This release is again in high standards. This music is dark. Noise, black, atmospheres, soundscapes and a satanism background. Great album for fans of Wolves in the throne room, Krallice, Leviathan and other electronica ambient or atmospheric black metal bands.

Teeth of the Sea – Orphaned by the Ocean

genre:post-rock, instrumental, free-jazz, post-punk, slowcore, jazz, ambient, shoegaze
Album Review by Sovereign
Photobucket
A paranoid intro, introduces us to the album concept. Experimental sounds and some ambient noises let the jazz sounds to become fully free and extreme. Next to it, a soundscape low the volume and guitar strings bring the post-rock in to the front line. Something from NY nowave and Swans atmosphere plains in the air. Beautiful noise-rock combined with electronic ambient, pass te sound bridge. Rock, slowcore, and jazz instruments mixed to paint the big colourful tableau. A parade of permissions and some distortions to make it more groovy. the post-punk smell is around and experimental rock brushes, shake the mind. Crazy mosquitos bites the skin. Blood, energy, amplifiers and noise, dramatise the work. There is no end in these compositions. All seven tracks work as one complete scene. A dark dream in a night of fires and earthquakes. these teeth are killing machines. No feelings just thoughts.

Noisy black metal, melodic parts like Green Carnation, and …In The Woods. Great compositions and a dark atmosphere. Hymns and ambient experiments an a funeral doom style. Melodic death parts and a nonstoping meta-black guitar distortion. Aggressive and scary themes. Progressive music themes and a crying mourning background. Melancholic metal, black shity screams, clean ubnormal vocals and an unrealistic mix of sweet parts with distorting moving monsters. A Storm of Light & Nadja – Primitive North [Split]
[Robotic Empire, 2009]
genre: sludge, ambient, drone, doom, metal
Split Review by Sovereign
Photobucket

A very interesting split release. An experimental noisy drone doom collaboration. Josh Graham’s a storm of light and our favourite nadja produce a small experimental diamond. ASOL’s tracks are sludge metal with a heavy accent and an old Neurosis atmosphere. Nadja ‘s tracks are an ambient trip around drones and doom noises. Nadja are again excellent.

[Neurot, 2008]
genre: sludge, doom, post-rock, experimental rock, psychedelic
Photobucket

The debut album from Graham’s new project “A storm of Light”. This band reminds me Neurosis of course, but from the “a sun that never sets” era. The album is excellent. The production is great. The compositions are modern and classic at the same time. Doom metal from an American point of view. Post metal or post rock in a mix. Experimental noise rock and drones, unstoppable drones, noisy and heavy drones. This is a dirty sludge metal epic release. I am really sad that I miss this release last year but I m still happy I can enjoy it together with the split release these days. Psychedelic heavy doom. Maybe my dreams are around these tracks, maybe I ‘ll try to find something really harsh to beat this feeling I got after the first listenings. Great Job

This single from Sunn 0)))’s founder O’ Malley is a mini trip to a dirty sump of coal tar. 12 minutes of guitar drones and other experimental sounds which deform the string sounds. This guy never stops. I kneel in front of his guitar. He is the master of drone doom. This track is an ambient brain corrosive machine… no more words.

Of Machines – As If Everything Was Held In Place
[Rise, 2009]
genre: post-hardcore, experimental rock, ambient, alternative rock, screamo
Album Review by Sovereign
Photobucket
Of Machines is a band which brings alternative rock and nu-metal together. They make this mix with the use of technology and electronics. We can find hardcore roots and a melodic attitude in the background. Their music can be described as an ambient kind of hardcore, maybe there is the definition of post-hardcore here. Guitars and hard percussions followed by brutal vocals and screams, distortions and clean vocals under a noisy electronic backdrop. They try to make the difference; they try to bring something new. I can say that is quite interesting, but on the other hand is a bit mannerist. In every song you can find something new, but you cannot really define the band. There is a mass of sounds, new music, great compositions, noises, and melodies, all of these out of a specific character. It is radical and modern. They are fully influenced from other alternative bands, from rock and metal music genres, but in any way this is one of the best post-hardcore albums of the year. Recommended to young people…

Merzbow – Camouflage , Somei 2009

Merzbow – Camouflage
[Essence Music,2009]
Merzbow – Somei
[Low Impedance Recordings,2009]
genre: experimental electronica, noise, avant-garde
Album review by goresonic

Merzbow is one of the greatest noise artists on the world. He has collaborated with a lot of different artists in his musical
carreer and he’s usually releasing more than 5 or 6 records per year (this year he has already released four records). His upcoming appearence in Synch festival in June (Greece,Athens) gives me the opportunity to present two of them.
camouflageThe first one (Camouflage) is a limited edition album of 800 copies released in 2009 but recorded live on September
and October of 2007. It’s a very very noisy and chaotic record. The noise here is produced electronically. The volume is up and
you’re getting deaf. The sound in some parts of the second track (Transparent Man Is Color With Blue And Pink) is what
remains in your ears at the end. There is nothing special about this one, especially when you’re thinking of his avant – garde techniques he deplyed in the past.
someiThe second one (Somei) was produced by a Greek label and is not as difficult to find as the first one. This is a heavier noise record with faster songs and so fucking good percussions. Here, the sound is more interesting and I think it’s easier to listen to it than
in Camouflage. There are electronic noises and real drums that weren’t in the other one. I strongly believe that noise music is made for live shows. Artists like Merzbow are recognized for their live performances. I hope he will not disappoint us in his appearance in Athens.

Fantastic black metal screams. They still mix black, doom and Scandinavian metal with a modern alternative and ambient metal sound and some progressive brushes. This noise metal they produce is unique. I can’t understand if the new album is better than ‘two hunters’. I still need a lot of listening. The Ep they release earlier (malevolent grain)
was excellent and it was the appropriate escort for the album. This release is not only for metal fans. It is a noise severe work, an ambient shock, an extreme masterpiece, a heavy index, a modern art, a progressive glance, a cruel pain, a new kind of experimental music. This is fantastic.
