Black Boned Angel – Verdun [2009]

Black Boned Angel – Verdun
[Riot Season, 2009]
genre: drone, doom, metal, experimental, noise, dark ambient
Album Review by Sovereign

As the press release info says: “Sharing a similarly bleak ground to Corrupted, Sunn 0))) and Earth, New Zealand’s Black Boned Angel return with their fourth full length album ‘Verdun’, and perhaps their most sombre and fully-realised work to date.” This is Campbell Kneale’s drone metal project. I am a fan of Birchville cat motel -the other solo project of him-and I was really expecting this one. The result is fantastic, an awesome dark ambient masterpiece and a drone doom metal fuss. This man is creating really progressive music, his noise is unreachable, his mind is genius and this album is again one of the best ever drone metal releases and maybe one of the most inspirational ever dark ambient(under huge noise passages) albums…. It is like a battle!

Alpha Cat = Sons of Alpha Centauri + Treasure Cat – Last Day of Summer [2009]

Alpha Cat = Sons of Alpha Centauri + Treasure Cat – Last Day of Summer
[Underdogma, 2009]
genre: stoner rock, instrumental, psychedelic rock, experimental rock, progressive rock, avant-garde, post-rock, post-metal
Split Review by Sovereign

“Last Day of Summer is a split album from dark Britain’s Swale, Kent, instrumentalists Sons of Alpha Centauri and West Virginia Riff Rock outfit Treasure Cat (featuring members of Karma to Burn). The eleven-track split album includes 3 exclusive tracks from Alpha Cat – the lethal collaboration of both bands rocking together plus all new material from both acts”. Personally, I prefer the tracks from Treasure Cat, maybe because of my music taste and my sympathy and preference to stoner rock. Treasure Cat create a full of energy instrumental stoner rock and I think their riffs are the best I’ve heard the last months. I get excited with ‘Valhalla’. Sons of Alpha Centauri produce a more virtuoso instrumental rock and a quite atmospheric and melodic dark and psychedelic rock. Their attitude is quite experimental and there is an ambient and a post-rock influence deep inside their music. I thins SOAC can reach the edges of experimental rock till the limit of post-metal and avant-garde metal. Both bands are really alternative and their collaboration is the most interesting part of their split release. Great inspirational guitar riffs! Huge riffs get stacked in my mind…

Maudlin of the Well – Part The Second [2009]

Maudlin of the Well – Part The Second
[Self Released, 2009]
genre: experimental rock, progressive rock, chamber pop, jazz, avant-garde, avant-prog, metal
Album Review by Sovereign

The story behind the recording of this album is really interesting. From 1999-2001, maudlin of the Well released three albums. These albums seamlessly blend metal, jazz, and prog in a fusion that is breathtaking. However, maudlin of the Well’s avant-garde nature also kept them from being more widely known. They disbanded in 2001, some members of the group going on to form Kayo Dot, a well known avant garde metal band. Yet over the years, through music message boards, forums, and blogs, maudlin of the Well slowly began to pick up a devoted following. In a MySpace blog post in 2008, maudlin of the Well front man Toby Driver mentioned he wanted to record some older songs that were never recorded, but was restricted by financial issues. Response and enthusiasm from fans was massive and a fan donated enough money to record a new album On May 2009 is online and free to download from the internet (there is a donate choice, like in rainbows style).
Experimental, orchestral, ambient, progressive rock and metal music. It is like and avant jazz something. It is quite strange and interesting at the same time. A great album from a great band. The tracks are actually new releases, but some parts of them are ideas and inspirations from the older records, that never been in them. These are not b sides; these are great tracks, and new recordings at all. Dark atmosphere, theatrical view, cinematic orchestra style, experimentalisms, and great compositions. This album is one of the best albums around experimental music.

Antique Brothers – Season’s Feast [2009]

Antique Brothers – Season’s Feast
[Not Not Fun, 2009]
genre: psych, avant garde, experimental, improv.
Album Review by [thezeroeffect]

Antique Brothers are Connecticut-bred brothers Cy and Ged Gengras who instead of the ordinary sibling squabbling have focused on producing music.
And they have done so for enough time to reach a point of what feels like great artistic communication. You can find their releases on various labels since 2006 but i think this year’s Season’s Feast on Not Not Fun would be a great place for you to get acquainted with the brother’s music.
Season’s Feast is a solid piece of psych music constantly shifting in mood, form & style. Employing a variety of acoustic sounds, heavy guitars that might remind you of doom/drone metal bands like Sunn O))) or The Goslings, even some Middle Eastern flavour they are able to keep a sense of chaos to it all that is just brilliant.
Their music craft is at its best in the last track of this album, Hourglass Of The Underworld where all these elements blend perfectly to form an ideal closing song.

Album Review by Sovereign
Photobucket
Noisescapes, sludgy riffs and tribal drums… Screams, roars and howls. Vocalist Alan Dubin of Khanate and drummer Jamie Sykes of Burning Witch have teamed up with shrewd DIY instrumentalist Carter Thornton and sound techs Jun Mizumachi and Brian Beatrice to create the newest signpost in extreme music. This is a very interesting noise and experimental metal release. This album is for avant-metalers and noise freaks. This Face is an annoying outstanding sound trial. This Face is for wicked people, it is for dusky minds. A great noise and industrial experience. Great experiment. Great job.

I think this is the 8th release of the one man band named Xasthur. He said is a solo project that will never play live, but I remember him live with Sunn 0))), or not? Again an excellent atmospheric blasphemy black metal, full of ambiences and experimental parts. An avant garde depressive music. This release is again in high standards. This music is dark. Noise, black, atmospheres, soundscapes and a satanism background. Great album for fans of Wolves in the throne room, Krallice, Leviathan and other electronica ambient or atmospheric black metal bands.

Merzbow – Camouflage , Somei 2009

Merzbow – Camouflage
[Essence Music,2009]
Merzbow – Somei
[Low Impedance Recordings,2009]
genre: experimental electronica, noise, avant-garde
Album review by goresonic

Merzbow is one of the greatest noise artists on the world. He has collaborated with a lot of different artists in his musical
carreer and he’s usually releasing more than 5 or 6 records per year (this year he has already released four records). His upcoming appearence in Synch festival in June (Greece,Athens) gives me the opportunity to present two of them.
camouflageThe first one (Camouflage) is a limited edition album of 800 copies released in 2009 but recorded live on September
and October of 2007. It’s a very very noisy and chaotic record. The noise here is produced electronically. The volume is up and
you’re getting deaf. The sound in some parts of the second track (Transparent Man Is Color With Blue And Pink) is what
remains in your ears at the end. There is nothing special about this one, especially when you’re thinking of his avant – garde techniques he deplyed in the past.
someiThe second one (Somei) was produced by a Greek label and is not as difficult to find as the first one. This is a heavier noise record with faster songs and so fucking good percussions. Here, the sound is more interesting and I think it’s easier to listen to it than
in Camouflage. There are electronic noises and real drums that weren’t in the other one. I strongly believe that noise music is made for live shows. Artists like Merzbow are recognized for their live performances. I hope he will not disappoint us in his appearance in Athens.

Zoroaster – Voice of Saturn
[Terminal Doom, 2009]
genre: doom, sludge, metal, experimental, stoner, psychedelic, avant-garde, heavy metal
Album Review by Sovereign
Photobucket
An interesting experimental sludgy and dirty doom metal album. Features guest vocals by Brent Hinds of Mastodon on the song “White Dwarf.” There is a heavy base under this band and it keeps them up. Their music is clever and avant-garde, and there is a psychedelic smell because of their influences. This work is a trip around doom metal, art metal, psychedelic rock, stoner metal, and sludge. No other band of this genre uses their atmospheres and soundscapes. It is the most psych metal I’ve listened the last years. Downtempo doom melodies fulfilled with excellent ambient and experimental sounds. Great job. It can shake your senses.

Aethenor – Faking Gold & Murder 2009

Aethenor – Faking Gold & Murder
[vhf records, 2009]
genre: avant-garde, experimental, ambient, dark ambient, drone, noise
Album Review by Sovereign
Photobucket
This year’s release from Aethenor, ‘Faking Gold and Murder’ is the third full-length by Vincent De Roguin (Shora), Stephen O’Malley (Sunn0))), KTL) and Daniel O’Sullivan (Guapo, Mothlite). This time, the core trio is joined by percussionists Nicolas Field and Alex Babel, as well as renowned guitarist Alexander Tucker and the inimitable David Tibet. I agree with [thezeroeffect]’s opinion from last’s year review that the journey through their tracks isn’t a simple one. FGM is a modern classical music trip. They produce music from the future. They tend to make underground metal music, but they are a lot of years in front where the music will be like this. This is avant-garde. The drums give a new dimension in the sound. The vocals (Current 93) are again very experimental and the ambient sounds are so dark that travel us around the grey clouds. Actually is very difficult to describe this album’s sound. I believe that is better than the previous ones and maybe is more complete as a work. The sound is so atmospheric and the images you make with your imagination are insane, dark and scary. The feelings you have during the listening are quite weird. Anxiety, fear and dread. Chaotic thoughts and bewilderedly reflections. If I try to lining up the sounds I picked out from the tracks I will draw up these: booms and clashes, sharp feedback bursts, and heavily effected ambient tones, deep synths, bells, and chanted or grief vocals, hard panned stammering percussion, dramatic piano and organ blossoms, massacred guitar and harmonium tones.

Blut Aus Nord – Memoria Vetusta II: Dialogue With The Stars

Album Review by Sovereign

Blut aus Nord is a black metal band from Mondeville, France. The name “Blut aus Nord” is German and literally translates to “Blood From North”. The band plays progressive black metal. Speedy guitars (or doomy at times), black metal attitude, noisy background, atmospheric ambient samples, technical play, black drum section, excellent black metal vocals, metal production, dark ambient compositions and a fully post-metal sound. I can affiliate them with Xasthur, Leviathan, Drudkh and wolves in the throne room. Although they are more atmospheric and melodic and sometimes reach the edge of post metal and hardcore. This release is a metal album, it is noise, it is deep dark and the black metal atmosphere makes it extreme.

Giant Squid – Ichthyologist 2009

Giant Squid – Ichthyologist
[self released, 2009]
genre: post-rock, progressive metal, experimental rock, doom metal, avant-garde, sludge
Album Review by Sovereign
Photobucket
Ichthyologist is a concept album, based on a graphic novel by guitarist/vocalist Aaron Gregory. Aaron is working in an aquarium and he is a kind of ichthyologist. He’s actually a professional scuba diver by trade who works for San Francisco’s Bay Aquarium, cleaning equipment and feeding sharks. He says about the concept: “Through the thoughts of the album’s protagonists, a man stripped of his humanity and left with nothing but the sea in front of him, comes a story about adapting in inhuman ways to survive the shock of human loss and total emotional tragedy, becoming something else entirely in the process”. The album is brilliant. It is based on slow prog tracks with a repetitive mood and a well constructed perspective. The vocals except some female , are really experimental some times hoarse, other times whispers, others sludgy and others clean but strained (remind me system of a down’s clean). The release is on a limited edition of a thousand of copies (we hope the End records will release it sometime). The tracks remind me Neurosis from a sun that never sets, but in a more progressive level. Track no 6 reminds old the Gathering (anneke sings there). The album is slow and the tracks are really prog and art rock compositions. The sound is a bit more metal in some songs, but in general it is a progressive artistic rock album. In some parts you feel you listen to a doom progressive metal band, but immediately the songs go lower and fully atmospheric. It is a bit sad. The mood is dark and pessimistic. Great album from an avant garde band. It connects 90’s doom, experimental progressive music, post (metal or rock doesn’t matter) and modern sludge.

Album review by Goresonic
Genre: Psychedelic rock, experimental rock, ambient, art rock, avant-garde
Photobucket
“Merriweather post paviliion” is Animal Collective’s latest album that will be out on January 12, 2009.
In this album, Animal Collective don’t surpsise us and they produce their usual 60’s psychedelic minimal techno and ambient sound that they are used to play in previous albums. Although, you cannot say that this album doesn’t have anything new to offer. I think that album after album their mission is to perfect this special sound and makes it the one which characterises them. “Somertime girls”, “Lion in a coma” “My girls” and “In the Flowers” are the songs that perfectly introduce us to their sound. “Taste” is the more minimal techno and noise song of the album and finally “Brothersport” , a full 60’s psychedelic sound with some noise, give us the perfect end for the album. The most important think in this song, is that they saw us how the Beach-Boys would have sound like today. Congatulations to them!

Isengrind, TwinSisterMoon, Natural Snow Buildings – The Snowbringer Cult 2008

Isengrind, TwinSisterMoon, Natural Snow Buildings – The Snowbringer Cult
[Students Of Decay, 2008]
genre: folk, drone, experimental, abstract, ambient, avant-garde
Album Review by |kollaps|
Photobucket
After a string of strictly limited and long sought cdr and cassette releases, The Snowbringer Cult is the first proper release of Vitré, France duo of Solange Gularte and Mehdi Ameziane on the fantastic Cincinnati, Ohio based label Students Of Decay.
The first part of this double album contains some new recordings of each member’s solo projects: Solange Gularte’s Isengrind deals with the careful knitting of dark short stories, using droney patterns, ritual percussion and oriental strings, creating a hazy atmosphere capable of transporting you in a fairy tale, where you could find La Monte Young and Terry Riley jamming with Flying Saucer Attack or No-Neck Blues Band.
The emergence of a totally unique and exceptional soundworld, located somewhere between the British folk music of Vashti Bunyan and more contemporary drone post-rock and free folk acts like Charalambides, Six Organs Of Admittance, Godspeed You! Black Emperor and even Skaters and Axolotl, is the outcome of Mehdi Ameziane’s effort as TwinSisterMoon.
Combine these two brilliant forces, and you have the second part of the album, Natural Snow Buildings’ tour de force: more than an hour of hallucinatory soundscapes, epic drones, layers of beautiful repetitive melodies, creating an ecstatic, ceremonial and dark swirling atmosphere. Immersed in this hypnotic ambience, you get the feeling that this music transports some kind of ancient wisdom that waited for centuries to be unleashed…
Wrapped in an amazing packaging featuring eye-popping artwork by Solange Gularte, The Snowbringer Cult is a staggering breakthrough for this low profile French duo, and it’s bound to have you hooked for a long period of time.

Original Silence – The Second Original Silence 2008

Original Silence – The Second Original Silence [Smalltown Superjazz, 2008]
Album Review by [thezeroeffect]
Photobucket
The Original Silence is the six-piece improvisational noise/jazz/rock ensemble of Mats Gustafsson, Thurston Moore, Jim O’ Rourke, Terrie Ex, Paal Nilssen-Love and Massimo Pupillo. Mats Gustafsson, is a well known member of the international free jazz society, but what would i know about that. The only reason I first tuned in to Original Silence, it was simply because of The Man, Thurston Moore. A shoking discovery that was. Never being a jazz man myself, let alone free jazz I was quite blown away by their high powered coctail. Thurston Moore’s noisy guitar mixed with O’Rourke’s electronic and Mats Gustafsson’s sax playing made a hell of a mixture.

This, their second release opens with a monster of a song, Argument Left Hanging – Rubber Cement, 7 minutes and 34 seconds of scrathy guitars, heavy bass and drumms along with Gustafsson’s sax lead to the closing all left to O’Rourke and his electronics. The rest of the album doesn’t follow this exploding beggining. Still, it offers a different look on their music. Their first album being an energy packed one, here we have an album offering a diversity of sounds. All elements of their first release are here, a bit less tense or maybe more sophisticated but, O’ Rourke’s electronics are more present than before, dominating songs, like High Trees & a Few Birds – The Doll’s Reflection which opens with a 5 minute solo by O’Rourke.5 minutes of sonic blasts of noise followed by calm ambient bits, that keep on going after the rest of the ensemble kicks in. The album closes with Crepescular Refractions – Mystery Eye, kind of like closing a cyrcle, since it’s a song very close to this album’s heavy powered opening.

Guapo – Elixirs 2008

Guapo – Elixirs [Neurot, 2008]
/Album Review by Sovereign
Photobucket
Guapo is an experimental band of Daniel O’Sullivan (piano, bass, guitars, harmonium, modular synthesisers, autoharp, voice, and electronics) and David J.Smith (drum kit, percussion) [Thompson left the band]. In this release there are some guests musicians: Sarah Hubrich / Violin, Viola (The Jewelled Turtle), Alexander Tucker / Voices (The Heliotrope) and Jarboe / Voices (The Selenetrope). The album is an avant prog, an experimental rock myth. This is one of the best releases of avant garde and art music this year. It sounds really fresh and modern. It is slow and atmospheric and the voices are fabled. The release is something more than a rock album, is more experimental than a neo-jazz release, is more forward than any progressive masterpiece, is darker than a gothic disc and is scarier than a horror movie. Guapo in Spanish means beautiful and yes it is…

Mothlite – the Flax of Reverie

Mothlite – the Flax of Reverie [Southern, 2008]
/Album Review by Sovereign
Photobucket
Mothlite are an avant-garde drone band consisting of Daniel O’Sullivan (Aethenor, Guapo, Miasma & the Carousel of Headless Horses) and Antti Uusimaki. This album is not something common and banal. The music is dark ambient. Both of the words explain exactly the sound and the atmosphere of this release. The album is the soundtrack of your scariest dreams. It’s a combination of neo jazz, classical music, ambient, drone and doom. Mothlite is definitely hard to define, as the avant-garde so achieves, so there’s not much more to be said. Mothlite use lots of instruments from the standard drums, keyboard and bass to a bassoon, a flute and a gong, and of course all the electronics Antti use. Nice album, fantastic atmospheres, great psychedelia.

Asva – what you don’t know is frontier

Asva – what you don’t know is frontier [Southern,2008]
/Album Review by Sovereign
Photobucket
Άμα έχεις να κανείς μ’ αυτούς: G. Stuart Dahlquist (bass, guitars), B.R.A.D (drums, percussion, vocals), Jessika Kenney (vocals), Holly Johnson (Vocal), Trey Spruance (guitars, tubular bells, piano), John Schuller (guitars), Mell Dettmer (Treatments) ,Randall Dunn (Treatments, Electric Wind), Troy Swanson (Hammond organ) δηλαδή με μέλη και σχέση με μπάντες όπως Sunn O))), Burning Witch, Goatsnake, Wolves in the throne room και Earth, τι άλλο μπορείς να περιμένεις πέρα από ένα ambient doom metal ιδιαίτερα ατμοσφαιρικό και πάρα πολύ πειραματικό. Η σύνθεση αυτή είναι βγαλμένη από δίσκο των dead can dance αφού έχει μπλεχτεί και σερβιριστεί με καταστροφικούς ήχους και θορύβους από Exhaust, GY!BE, OM Boris, Bongzilla και Sleep.

Jarboe/Justin K. Broadrick – J²

Jarboe/Justin K. Broadrick – J2 [the End.2008]
/EP Review by Sovereign
Photobucket

Albums Reviews – Statements by Sovereign

Ulver – Shadows of the Sun [Jester,2007]

Pig Destroyer – Phantom Limb [Relapse,2007]

Caina – Mourner [Profound Lore,2007]

Melt Banana – Bambi’s Dilemma [A-Zap,2007]
Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

Black Shape of Nexus – b.son [Vendeta,2007]
Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

Alcest – Souvenirs d’ un autre monde [Prophecy,2007]
Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

Electric Wizard – Witchcult Today [Rise Above,2007]
Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

Battles – Mirrored 2007

Battles – Mirrored [Warp , 2007]
/Album Review by Sovereign

Don Caballero, Storm and Stress, Lynx, Helmet, Tomahawk, The Mark of Cain, Sludgehammer ) Οι συνθέσεις στο δίσκο είναι γαμημενα διαστροφικές.

Stars of the Lid – …And Their Refinement of the Decline 2007

Stars of the Lid – Stars of the Lid And Their Refinement of the Decline [Kranky, 2007]
/ Album review by Sovereign
