This is one of my most expected releases of this year. Especially after I read Akerfeldt’s (Opeth) statement that this will be one of the heaviest albums of the decade. But in my opinion, this was also the biggest lie of the decade. In fact, when I heard the album, the first thought in my mind was that I made a mistake and played the wrong album. But it was not a mistake. That was the big disappointment for me. Most people believe it is a great album. Low tempo compositions full of clear vocals. Full of depressive and melancholic compositions as always the band did.
I must mention a couple of things now. Sometimes I think I’m hearing an Opeth album. Just listen to the third track “Idle Blood”. It’s a pure slow and atmospheric Opeth track. So similar that I m hearing Akerfeldt in vocals. Their sound is like “Last Fair Deal Gone Down” and “Tonight’s Decision”, a pretty safe way to create melancholy. But not the way I like it from them before. “Viva Emptiness” and “The Great Cold Distance” are still blowing my mind and my emotions. Don’t get me wrong I still think this is a good album. But just good is never enough for Katatonia.

That’s the third album for Gorod and I can say I’ve been expected this kind of album from a Swedish band, but these French surprised me in a really positive way. A fantastic uber-technical death metal album. The album is full of crazy riffing and crazy drumming, they are just amazing players. The vocals are pure death, brutal style. Not an easy album to get into. Some melodic riffs and some clean vocals will help you not get dizzy and make it more understandable. The production is great. There are some parts with cool blast beating which made me ecstatic. This album is a bomb for your ears. Be careful.
Three tracks of pure brutal hardcore metal. They request us to upload their Ep and it is a pleasure for us. They release it for free via their website. The release is built on interesting metal with progressive roots and death metal attitude. This is an EP full of aggressive guitars, brutal vocals and core rhythm section. Their try is promising and they are proving that they have old school influences. They sound skilled and their sound is on high standards. Stay heavy!!!
That’s the second album for Arcana Coelestia and I can say that I’m quite overwhelmed. This is not funeral doom. It’s funeral doooooooooooooooom. Easily compared with Esoteric but this has a bit more ambient, dramatic tone. Vocals are death groooowls mostly, but you can also find clear ones. In the fifth track there is some Italian talking which lead to true black metal growls coming right from the early 90’s. There are also a few female vocals in this album. Drums are really heavy and really slow. Guitars are slow too. The compositions cause an emotional explosion. Melancholy, darkness, romance, madness, fear all are here together. Pretty amazing work by these guys I believe they are at the same level as Esoteric. And a big applause for the glorious closing track. 
ZAO is one of the bands which made metalcore. They started as a Christian metalcore band (remember that in –core genres the most of the bands follow an attitude or a belief) [straight edge, pagan, vegan, satanism, right wing, left wing etc], but after some members change they are not anymore, as the most of the band members are not considered as Christians anymore. All these years several people take place behind the instruments of ZAO, as I said, but the band keep a unique character and a familiar hardcore metal sound. Brutal vocals rotate with clean and every track has a different –core attitude. Death, punk, metal, post, thrash and heavy tones. This release is an album-compilation of metallic hardcore. There are some routes you have to follow in order to build a core something, and ZAO did it really well. An album for metal heads, an album for head bangers, this release is quite strong and excellent from the music structure side. A metal album that can satisfy everyone who likes hard and heavy music. Awake? is another solid addition to ZAO’s rich catalog. It’s not cracking or impressive, but fans will get everything they expect from a ZAO release.
Δε μπορώ να πιστέψω ότι ένας αμερικανός στρατιώτης από το Colorado,ο οποίος ήταν προσφάτως στον πόλεμο, μαζι με ένα τυπο από το Denver έγραψε αυτό το αριστούργημα. Φοβερές progressive black-death συνθέσεις με αρκετές δόσεις sludge και post metal. Black φωνητικά ως επί το πλείστον και dark καθαρά εκεί που πρέπει. Δε μπορώ να βρω κάτι κακό στον δίσκο. 
The band is now mature. Their metal is technical, raw and hard. This is heavy metal with thrash attitude and brutal vocals. This is a fresh hardcore, a more metalcore than anything else, but on the other hand, it is the most classical metal hardcore, the most heavy and power metal influenced release of the genre. This is pure and strong. Sometimes the album sounds bland but in any way, every single track is unique and interesting. This Christian metal band offers us positive tracks and hardcore music. This album could move the band forward. This is the abstract album of them. They can be better, but with this release they can get out of the mass, out of the trash. Excellent blast beat hardcore compositions. Music made for hardcore people. This is hardcore metal and nothing else. Recommended to fans of Killswitch Engage, Between the Buried and Me, the Black Dahlia Murder, Architects, Burnt by the Sun, Burst and As I Lay Dying. If you give time to this record you will realize how excellent it is. Maybe in some months or some years from now, it will be the flagship of the metal hardcore armada. 
Raw death metal or a more blackened style of death metal?
The Greek Atmospheric Death Machine is Back after Several Years of Silence with a New Killer Production! Great songs, great atmosphere, really heavy music. Among the best Death albums of this year. 10 January live in Athens, Gagarin205. 
Conifer combine a space rock music background with metal, hardcore and modern alternative music. They are heavy and really hard. This album is really interesting and is a post rock wannabe with a heavy metal smell. Their sound is coming from the early 70s and ends up 2 or 3 years later from now. They remind me the Grails. 
The band comes from France, I hope they will be like Overmars. French metal scene is really big and proud. Caldera points out an excellent profile and offers us interesting works. They are a metal band, as simple as this. This album is similar with doom metal releases, or sludge instrumental works, but I can’t define it. It is heavy, it is metal, it is well produced and well played. 
Again this mystical metal sense. Jarboe tries to impress with her voice. The album definitely has a good mix of styles on it – random bits of metal, droning, avant-garde, noise, melody, experimental, rock and electronica stuff. A great job, a soundtrack of voices and modern sounds.
As I said (in Greek) for the previous release “unconquered” , Eric, research the interminable spectrum of ambient sounds and repeated drone guitars. He tries to search the use of guitar as unique generator of tone. Using real-time looper he manufactures soundscapes and basic musical structures. If you like Unconquered you ll love this one. Hurry up this is the best ambient album of the year…
